I just hope Vince doesn't hurt Randy in practice and snap him in two like a twig by accident.

I catch your drift, Sly. But, here's a recent article that suggest Randy is still looking for an edge:

Welker getting kick out of it
He's happy to help Moss with fútbol

One part of the story speaks to how far Wes Welker has come in his NFL career. Another highlights how Randy Moss, entering his 11th season, remains in dogged pursuit of excellence.

What ties it all together is a soccer ball.

The story goes something like this: Over the course of his remarkable 112-catch season last year, Welker added a distinguished admirer to what has become a growing legion of boosters - Moss. The two were naturally spending a lot of time together as Patriots receivers, and it wasn't long before Moss started chatting up Welker on some of the finer points of his smooth route-running.

How do you get in and out of your cuts so efficiently while running full speed? What helps you find those creases in tight spaces, which is such a key in the NFL passing game these days? Tell me more about your footwork.

Welker shared with Moss that he believed his background in soccer was a big part of it. He started playing fútbol when he was 4 years old, and continued through his senior year at Heritage Hall High School in Oklahoma City...
Moss agrees. So impressed was he with what he saw from Welker last season, he's added his own soccer-specific drills to his training this offseason in Florida.
Indeed, the two have become close friends over the last year, not to mention one of the NFL's most lethal 1-2 tandems. Welker said they speak regularly about how they can make each other better, which is why it won't be a surprise if the two are kicking soccer balls together on the Gillette Stadium practice field.

"He called me up, told me he had the soccer ball out, and that he and his boys were doing one-on-one work," Welker said. "I'm anxious to do the same."

An aside: Belichick likes cross-sport training to aid in Football skill-sets. They converted a collegiate wrestler who didn't even play college football, Stephen Neal, to a lineman because of the handwork wrestling hones. He is also a big supporter of Lacrosse (Nationals recently held at Gilette Stadium.) So, this doesn't surprise me...will be interesting if they start looking out for receivers (at least slot receivers) who have some futbol in their background due to Welker's success.

Lots of shows the Pats being very interested in Channing Crowder. Are there any current Pats players making an impact now that were drafted after only 2 years of college experience?
Moses

Well Moses, Stephen Neal did not even play college football but is now a starting guard for the Pats. But Corey Dillon, Deion Branch, Josh Miller and Keith Traylor all played two years or fewer at a four-year college after transferring from junior colleges. Dillon played only one season at Washington after playing at two different jucos.

It appears at first glance that Vince makes a cameo in the PatriotsToday video from the Pats website today. He is running a conditioning drill in the background while some offensive players are in the foreground...clad in the trademark red sleeves. (Although, note that it seems another, I believe, Adalius Thomas has taken a shining to Vince's fashion sense, as there was some footage of him in red sleeves also.)

There’s been some chatter on the comments, asking about rookies Vince Redd, Jonathan Wilhite, and Shawn Crable.

We here at PFW like Redd. He’s got tremendous potential and he certainly looks the part off the field. So far, he hasn’t stood out on the field, although he has been very active. Unlike, say, DL Zach West a year ago, who was always standing around with his helmet off whenever we spotted him. It’s very early still, but I think Redd is in the mix to compete for a job.

Wilhite has made a little more noise, having picked off a couple of passes during one-on-one drills with the receivers. Again, it’s way too early to assess his long-term prospects, but he hasn’t done anything to hurt himself thus far.

Crable, like Redd, is out there a lot, but hasn’t had many opportunities to shine yet.

Another rookie of note is QB Kevin O’Connell. During the spring, he appeared to have changed his throwing mechanics a bit, and looked like he was thinking too much about it whenever he threw. His passes were often fluttery and off-target. In training camp, though, he seems to have worked out the kinks and is throwing nice, tight spirals, generally on target. He looks more comfortable with his new motion and is getting a decent amount of reps, particularly in sessions when Brady is resting his arm.

Oh, and someone wanted to know about how Moss has looked. Um, remember last season? Yeah, like that.

Evening attendance
The following players have not be spotted on the field for the indoor workout Jason Webster, Vince Redd, Richard Seymour and Marcus Pollard. The team is still stretching at this point.

On a personal note, I’m worried about my boy Redd. I picked him as my darkhorse to make the roster. Not feeling as good about that pick after he’s missed two workouts in a row on the fourth day of camp. :(

Anybody have an inside scoop of what's going on?

Welker, Hobbs, Ruud off PUP
August 2, 2008

There was a flurry of roster activity at the start of Saturday afternoon’s practice, most of which was significant. Wes Welker, Ellis Hobbs and Bo Ruud were taken off the PUP list and suited up for practice. Welker missed the start of camp with a reported groin injury while Hobbs underwent offseason surgeries on his labrum and groin. The reasons for Ruud’s delayed start are unknown.

Also, the Patriots placed tackle Anthony Clement on injured reserve with a knee injury and signed offensive lineman Barry Stokes. Stokes, 34, has played in 83 career games with 44 starts in parts of 10 seasons. He’s spent time with Miami (1997-98), Oakland (1999), Green Bay (2000-01), Cleveland (2002-03), Atlanta (2005) and Detroit (2006).

In other attendance news, Jason Webster, Matt Light, Ryan O’Callaghan, David Thomas, James Sanders and Kyle Eckel joined the five remaining members of the PUP list: Mike Vrabel, Stephen Neal, Oliver Ross, Jarvis Green and Mike Wright. Rookie linebacker Vince Redd, who’s been out of practice since July 29, returned wearing a red, non-contact jersey.

2) Tackling drill in focus. As training camp has progressed, the level of contact has gradually increased. Along those lines, the coaching staff called for a tackling drill today. Orange cones are set up in a 10-yard box, and the defender starts in the box, with an offensive player 10 yards up the field. When the offensive player begins to move toward the box, the defensive player steps up and must execute the proper fundamentals of one-on-one tackling. A Vince Redd stick on Heath Evans drew a reaction from the crowd.

Great moves!

Gaffney just made Meriweather whiff in a new drill, where the offensive player takes the ball in an area only 10 yards wide and the defender must try to tackle him.

Green-Ellis made a similar move on Antwain Spann.

Vince Redd just drilled Heath Evans into the ground. That hurt from up here.

Ok, check that box. Redd can tackle big running backs–with attitude. Any indication where the Pats coaches are playing Redd?

i would think with reds size and speed he would be an outside linebacker

They had a game-like practice tonight in Gillette Stadium for season ticket holders and Foxboro residents. Didn't see Redd's name in any of the play by play breakdowns on the blogs this evening. Hope he gets some reps on Thursday versus the Ravens.

BTW, anybody up in the Eastern part of Mass, the game is supposed to be on WVCB Channel 5 according to the Patriots site. Haven't found anywhere on the TV Channel website or any other "alternate" sites that will be streaming it.

Play of the day: The team lined up for some one-on-one tackling midway through the practice and Vince Redd delivered the most jarring hit of the day, leveling Heath Evans with a solid shoulder tackle along the sideline. The runners generally have an advantage in the drill and most made life difficult on the tacklers, but Redd’s hit was the exception.

I read in one of your notes that Vince Redd, the undrafted rookie, did not participate in a long stretch of practices to open training camp. I was wondering if there is information regarding that situation. Also, how will that affect his chances of making the patriots roster?
Colby
A: Redd returned to practice in the 14th session of camp, Colby, and the time he missed will certainly play a factor in his hopes of making the team. He missed time due to an undisclosed injury. In the end, I think Redd is likely a candidate to be placed on the practice squad.

As for the rest of the rookies, like Shawn Crable, Jonathan Wilhite (who probably won’t play after pulling up lame Monday night), Gary Guyton, and Vince Redd, among others, this will be a chance to see who the “gamers” are. All will surely get significant playing time. And don’t call any of them Shirley.
