Losing a key athlete is tough though. I've seen some situations in VA that got really nasty, i.e., lawsuits, suspensions, counter -suits, etc.

My only issue with the transfer rule is that there are a myriad of legitimate reasons a student/parent would move their child from public school to private school outside of competing in athletic events.

In our case, we gravitated toward private school after the public schools failed our daughter. Thankfully this was early on and we did two years of transition in home school before moving to VA and enrolling in LCA. However, if a parent had to go through what our family went through with a child at the high school level, it would be sad if the child moved schools but lost the ability to participate in extra curricular activities. In other words, I don't know enough about the system but I hope that there is some sort of appeal process in place that takes into account the reasons behind a transfer.

Yes, it is more commonly referred to as taxes

No transfer should be made for athletic reasons. No school should recruit an athlete from another school.

I know of a transfer for athletic reasons that cost one school 2 state championships, in which the player was recruited. The "gaining school" should have been slammed by VHSL.

No transfer cost anyone a State Championship. You do not know if that team would have won State or not with any particular player. Conversely, you do not know if the team that won State would not have with out that player.
If one school has a strong program and they have an opportunity to go, they should. They shouldn't be allowed to hop schools.

Losing a key player IS tough. Losing a player who doesn't want to be there isn't as tough.

A check and balance that I have not seen anyone mention yet is this.....

Kids at LCA grow up in middle school, and JV playing for their schools volleyball or basketball or football team, and if LCA "recruits" a kid from Glass region to come in and play that kid doesnt make the team on the Varsity Level.

If this happens to the right/wrong kid, whose parent will cause a stink, the problems will correct themselves.

Unless you are Jim Justice at Greenbrier East Highschool in W.V. you can recruit anyone you want, and doesnt matter who's kid you kick off the team to bring them in... Cause your richer!

I don't see anyone getting kicked off team because someone transfers in. Now whether or not he "starts", that a different story. A coach will play best players that are on team.

Basically the same thing. Who said parents were rational? Little Johnny started last year. This year he was replaced by Little Steven who is getting a scholarship. Yeah, no parent would EVER make a stink about that.

I know from experience that private school parents are even worse with complaining about their kids not getting any playing time. One of my friends' parents went so far as to insult the coach's coaching ability because he wasn't getting the time he thought he deserved.

But have you ever had a parent come out of the stands walk over and pray for you during a game?

LOL. This happens everywhere and not just in sports and not isolated to private schools. I used to help public schools in California with some of their theatre arts programs and parents would have the same complaints if their child wasn't cast in a production or didn't win an award for their efforts.

I grew up in the public school system and saw parents do this sort of thing all the time. I don't think it's isolated to private schools, at least in my experience.

Unfortunately, take a parent who already thinks their child should be on the team regardless of skill level and combine that with the perceived financial leverage they have at a private school and you may have a nasty mix that brews entitlement. I do believe a parent with that personality would be the same way in a public school setting but the private environment would just amplify it. The argument goes from "I'm paying participation fees/tax dollars for you to play my child" to "I'm paying xxx amount of money in tuition for you to play my child."

As a private school parent myself, I love the arrangement. Any concerns I have as a parent get addressed and taken more seriously than they ever were in the public school. Both in my time as a student and in my experience as a parent.

parents always complain about little Johnny's playing time, regardless of school.

The worst I ever got jumped by a parent was after a game, in which I thought was one of best games I ever coached. Every player on team got in the game, had one at bat and played one inning in field. We won game 4-3. Yet he wasn't happy.

I have seen parents basically "take over" high school teams. This normally happens when a school has weak leadership in front office.

Isolated? No. More pronounced? Yes. I've been in both settings.

This is the exact situation that, after being repeated time and again, caused some changes a few years ago at Holy Cross in Lburg. Or so I was told.

I've been on campuses of several of those private schools listed. Some are like country clubs. I don't have a problem with privates being forced to play up a level or split entirely. If they're giving out aid, they have a distinct competitive advantage. But the public schools aren't going to be in a perfect gate after a split. Such a move usually marginalizes their competitve level. The best athletes want to compete at the highest levels. In Tennessee, the money in the private schools will always keep them at the highest levels. The publics will become a feeder for the privates.
