I've been to Germany. It is safe to say that the Swastika is not a symbol of pride and heritage to Germans. In fact, unless the law was changed it is illegal.

While I disagree with his conclusion Charles is a pretty smart dude and actually gives a more thought out reason to change the name then Shorty Costas

I thought the Kraut's reasoning was pretty weak. Yes, I am biased, but it was a poor argument. Some people would say that the first part of Chuck's name has changed meaning over the years and has become offensive.

President leaves agents to die in Benghazi? IRS picks political enemies to harass? The government keeps a record of every single phone call we make? Those are historical, societal changing events and they got a few months at most before they just stopped being talked about. But a debatably offensive football team name? That's been talked about on and off for a decade at least. There's just a mysteriously constant pressure that pushes this story. It doesn't go away. The change is inevitable.

Nice video, probably created and edited by some white person. It's funny how the makers of this video are okay with the term "Indian".

Snyder needs to start flooding the reservations with cash and business.

I spent several years working on a reservation for a tribe in California. They never referred to themselves as Native Americans. They referred to themselves as Indians. This wasn't only one specific tribe either. As I worked with tribal governments from other tribes throughout the west coast, they always would use the term Indian.

This was in California, where people are offended by just about everything as well.

Just like in many other cases, the "offensiveness" is most likely manufactured by folks with an agenda.

Obviously you did not do enough to protect them from what they should inherently be offended by. Just because they don't know any better doesn't mean we shouldn't do our part.

The video that aired last night during the NBA Finals was financed and produced by a tribe in California at rather significant expense. Perhaps even one of the tribes that Yacht Rock was among.

I don't know anyone who finds the term Indians offensive. I have known plenty of Native Americans who find the racial slur Redskins offensive. I don't recall any tribes picketing in Cleveland about their name. But they did complain about the caricaturization of Chief Nokahoma (sp?). Most tribes are cool with using their name for regional schools. That's what made the NCAA's forcing UND to change their nickname so ridiculous. The Redskins name is a completely diferent situation.

I'm sure this makes sense, but I'm confused by it. My whole post was meant to be sarcasm, but I can't tell if yours is or not.

Sly, it's been shown over and over again that the term 'redskin' is not a pejorative, and every poll and study conducted has shown the term is overwhelmingly NOT offensive to Native Americans. That people are taking offense on their behalf is laughable. Yet the term 'Indian' has been an ignorant misnomer since the day it started. I'm not saying it's a bad term, but why is that okay? To me, that would be more racist to continue to use than 'redskin'. And as we continue down this road, one day the term 'Indian' will be banned also. What then? Do we petition the state of Indiana's name be changed?

I just love how this issue makes people so angry no matter what side of the argument you are on.

You would think that this issue actually mattered. It is a shame people don't get so passionate about issues that actually matter.

But are the people that are offended the ones who SHOULD be offended or the ones who SAY they should be offended?

Personally, I have no problem telling people who are offended easily to screw off. What we need is to realize and accept that some people are perpetual whiners.

Probably the most laughable thing about this argument is hearing white people begin with the preface "I don't hate Native-Americans, in fact my great-great-great-great-great-great grandmother was 1/16'th Cherokee."

The background of an individual should not give way to a point being valid or invalid. I can accept disagreement on an issue, but I can't accept that because someone can check a certain box, that their opinion matters anymore than the next guy. Oh, and for some reason no one seems too upset about the Blackhawks... hmmm...

The Blackhawks take their name from an army division which took its name from a Sauk Indian chief named Black Hawk. Tough to compare the term "redskin" to the name "blackhawk".
