Tom O'Brien from BC is moving within the conference (and division) to go to NC State.

He was the only coach in the conference that didn't have the "can't leave for another school in the ACC" clause in his contract.

THAT will make the Wolfpack's next trip north a REAL pleasant homecoming.

I'm really surprised he left, to be honest.

Thats a good program up there, and only getting better.

NC State? c'mon. Mu$t have been a $uper good rea$on

It was definitely money. O'Brien wanted out of BC because he was the 10th or 11th paid coach in the league.

not a great hire IMO......they will be consistently good and go to average bowl games, but i do not see them winning a bunch of championships with him as as coach.

I think they should've went to Paul Johnson like was reported.

Then again, I don't mind State not being good.

would that have been a possibility no matter WHO they hired? I doubt it.

Not like they're in the Big Televen or something 8)

all the big names had no interest...i think it has a lot to do with state fan and their unrealsitic attitudes. they will like o'brien because he runs a disciplined program though, something they need in raleigh to get rid of that thuggish mentaility they have in that program.

I disagree. BC is about as good now as they're ever going to be. They don't have the boosters, facilities or budget to do much better, particularly as compared to what other ACC programs bring to the table. BC also has to fight for fans w/ 4 different pro sports and a number of other college programs within the city of Boston alone. They don't fill their stadium.

If NC State ever gets their act together -- biiiiiig 'if', I know -- they have the resources to become a nationally significant program. I think O'Brien would have to be either fanatically loyal or downright foolish not to take the NC State job.

I'm with Libertine on this one. NC State has more money and athletic support than they know what to do with. Their biggest problem is over-enthusiastic fans with high expectations. The moment someone can actually meet some of those expectations, they're likely to get on a roll.

I agree as well, i heard he was only making like 700k a year( that isn't buying a huge house in boston) and fans ( except for loyal BC ) fans could really care less about the program. Probably because he has won 8-9 games for years, so it was time to move on. Plus the bump in pay and i heard his wife wanted to move south because they already have a vacation home in SC or something. Not sure what salary he got hired at, but it will be more $$ and the cost of living will be cheaper plus factor in leaving 15 years of nasty winters......id move too.

i disagree...tom o'brien will not be winning championships at nc state....first of as scorcho said, the fans are ridiculous and are not patient, 2nd, not unless o'brien changes his recruiting strategy i doubt the florida pipeline there will continue to exist.

I would leave BC for NC St. in order to double my salary. Factor in the lower cost of living...

But, I do think he had a better chance of winning at BC.

I'm certainly not saying that O'Brien will win at NC State. I don't know that he's necessarily any better at leading a program than Amato was. As has already been stated, the fans at NC State have wildly unrealistic expectations and I think a lot of the problems down there stem from trying to keep the asylum happy instead of spending time and rescources actually building the programs.
However, if you can find a good cult de-programmer and a few administrators with some stones in their pockets to handle the fanbase, the sky is the limit for that place.

There is no doubt the ceiling is much higher at NCst. than at BC. He'll just have to learn how to deal with crazy fans, rather than apathetic ones.

wondering if he'll institute a rule forbidding fans from urinating in the stands?
