The low Class A South Atlantic League named Hickory outfielder Ryan Cordell, of the Texas Rangers’ organization, as its player of the week for the period that ended on Sunday.

Cordell was 13-for-22 with five extra-base hits in the period. That included the first four-hit game for Hickory this season.

The Hickory Crawdads have been on a tremendous roll of late, and one of the key wheels on their victory machine is outfielder Ryan Cordell.

As June headed toward July, the Crawdads at one point had recorded an incredible stretch of 32 wins and nine losses over a 41-game span.

“It’s pretty amazing,” said Crawdads media director Aaron Cox. “If we had opened the season with a stretch like this, we’d be the talk of all of baseball.”

Contributing to the hot streak has been the smoking bat and stellar defense of Cordell. His average stood at a lofty .329, with four home runs and 26 RBIs. Quite an improvement from the .241 he posted in his first pro season last year at short-season Spokane.
