In my many interactions with him back in my Austin days, he was always a thoughtful gentleman. He was one of the few coaches of his era who recognized the toll that the coaching lifestyle has on a family and who chose to step away from the game at a time when he was still very much in demand in order to concentrate on what is really important in life.
And for the record, it was under his guidance that Texas did integrate their football team. So before some of you take your shots at him, check with Roosevelt Leaks & Earl Campbell and ask them what kind of man DKR was when he chose to bring down some color barriers for them.
