back to triple G: not surprised he went, he's earned it.

just a little surprised at how quick it went down- late Saturday afternoon is an odd time to roll out the new guy

better for the WU crew to have a weekend to absorb it, though I suspect that team will still be tough next season

kinda sad that we won't have a chance to see if RMK could have taken him down

Peele's '96 team was as good as any ever seen in the Big South. They totally blew-out one of the better LU teams in a game in the Vines for the conference championship. In the NCAA's Peele lost a close one in the final minute to a Cincinatti team that made it all the way to the elite eight that year.

In addition, his recruiting efforts helped turn around VA Tech.

Peele is a really good coach and an excellent choice for Winthrop.
One year does not a coach make, even if one agrees the 96 team was all that good. Coastal almost beat Indiana as a 16 seed, but that doesn't mean they were almost as good as Indiana.

RD was a decent/better than average recruiter for LU, but was not a good HC. If Peele was all that great, he would not still be in the BS (as an assistant no less), after all these years. Ever hear his name mentioned for a HC opportunity, even being associated with a winning program like WU? Not saying he will be terrible, or not good, but it is still a major step down IMO for WU.

I agree he is an excellent choice for WU, especially if you are a LU fan. RD would have been better for them, but somehow didn't think that was ever a consideration.

Peele's brief history as a head coach wasn't great (especially after his first year when he went to the NCAAs). I'm not going to pretend to know all the circumstances behind his time at UNCG, because I really don't know much about it. All I remember was that he was there when they moved from the Big South and the SoCon. It'll be interesting to see what he learned from his time as a head coach, and what he learned as an assistant afterwards at VT and under Gregg Marshall and how he'll apply as a head coach again. I know that Marshall was very high on him and said last year when he took the CofC job that he thought Peele should definitely be the next coach at WU. I guess we'll see...

I know this is :offtopic but why did the SoCon invite UNCG??? They don't have football.

Peele's situation at UNC-G was unique. They were moving from NAIA into D-1 and the Big South. In anticipation for the move to D-1, UNC-G put together a team in '93 comprised almost entirely of freshman with the goal of having a strong veteren team for '96 when they would be eligable for a tournement berth. Peele took the helm during the later half of that project and led his team into the NCAA's in '96 and nearly knocked-off Cinncinatti.

After the success of '96, Peele had to completely rebuild from the bottom up because the majority of his team graduated in '96. To make matters worse, the administration decided to move up into the Southern Conference. Peele was behind the eight ball, and UNC-G never got its momentum back. Eventually, Peele was let go. But keep in mind, there were some poor decisions that were made there that were outside of RP's control.

Peele is a good coach. He has a strong reputation in coaching circles as both a recruiter and game-planner. He was brought in for the purpose of replacing Marshall, and now the fateful day is finally here. He will take over this team and keep them near the top of the conference.

Winthrop will remain as a very tough opponent for LU.

BUMP

Anybody watching the Wichita State & Creighton game on ESPN2? Same old purple-faced, pinstripe suit-wearing Greg Marshall, except now he's wearing GLASSES from the 1980s.
