Barry Larkin, the longtime Cincinnati Reds shortstop who excelled at virtually every aspect of the game, was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame on Monday by members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America.

Barry Larkin played his entire career with his hometown Cincinnati Reds.
Larkin received 495 of the 573 votes cast, an 86.4 percentage that eclipsed the 75 percent needed for induction. He was the only player elected by the writers and will join the late Ron Santo, who was elected by the veterans committee last month, with new plaques this summer in Cooperstown, N.Y.
Jack Morris, the No. 1 starter for three World Series winners from 1984 through 1992, finished second to Larkin, with 66.7 percent. The former Houston Astros first baseman Jeff Bagwell (56 percent) and the former closer Lee Smith (50.6) were the only other players to collect at least half of the votes.
