Wow, has anyone else ever heard of this happening?
Brookville's Maxwell doesn't pitch in loss at college's request

Maxwell, a Radford signee, said after Tunstall’s 6-4 win Tuesday night that he decided not to pitch under the recommendation of Highlanders pitching coach Brian Anderson. They both agreed that Maxwell had seen a heavy pitching workload in the days leading up to the game.

The Brookville senior threw 85 pitches in a complete-game effort last Monday in a 3-0 win over Rockbridge County in the first round of the Region III tournament, and he tossed a complete game last Thursday in a 9-6 region semifinal victory over Fort Defiance.

Maxwell was prepared to pitch on four days’ rest, but he learned after school Tuesday that Radford was recommending he rest his arm.

"My dad called me after school, and I actually called the pitching coach (Anderson), and he said, ‘You know, I’m not telling you no.’ It was all my choice," Maxwell said. "I talked about it with my dad. We had other independent college coaches give their opinion on it, and we came to the conclusion that the best thing was to not throw (Tuesday night)."

..Shelton has had his share of Division I pitchers in recent years — Jacob Thompson (Virginia), Justin Thompson (Virginia), Joe Mantiply (Virginia Tech) — and he can’t remember ever having a college pitching coach advise a player not to throw.

This says more about the kid than it does the coach.

I know I'd just tell the college coach to back off...

Im baffled here...I mean this is a big game...this was touted as being a battle of the two best left-handers in Group AA (at ;east around here). I would not be happy if I was a teammate either

Not necessarily...if something happened and he did get hurt and the coach had told him not to play, and he was done for his freshman year, there may not be a scholly for his sophomore year.

That's a fair point. I just know from my personal standpoint that I wouldn't let a college coach dictate whether I pitch or not.
