Delaware's size and location make it normal for its high school varsity sports teams to play schools from outside the state.
But Red Lion Christian Academy is taking that concept to another level this coming season as part of an effort to become a national high school football power, school officials said.
The team will play eight of its 10 regular-season games this fall against schools from outside Delaware, including six from Pennsylvania and Maryland. Two will be road games in Lynchburg, Va., and Darien, Conn.
In previous school years, the Red Lion volleyball and softball teams have made trips to Liberty Christian, paid for in part by fundraisers the teams held. Day said the school will pay for the football team's road trips this season to neighboring states, but that funding for the trips to Liberty Christian in Virginia, and to Darien, Conn., will come from boosters and "not from the school's money."Click Here for Full Story
Liberty Christian is located next to Liberty University, a Christian Evangelical university founded by Jerry Falwell in 1971. Day said many Red Lion students go there for college and the sports teams' road trips there have allowed Red Lion students to see the campus. "It gives them a feel for the college," Day said.
