A sports writer, an Olympian, two former Alabama football stars and a former Auburn baseball star headline the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2011.
Gadsden Times Sports Editor Emeritus Jimmy Smothers, who spent 43 years as the sports editor at the paper, headlines the eight-member class, which will be inducted at a banquet in May in Birmingham.
The Hall of Fame also will welcome Vonetta Flowers, Shaun Alexander, Jeff Rutledge and Frank Thomas, who join Smothers in making up the modern category inductees.
Three more inductees join the 2011 class in the old timers category in Henry Hart, David Hill and Al Worthington. The eight inductees brings the total number of Alabama Sports Hall of Fame inductees to 298 since 1969.
Al Worthington was a star pitcher at the University of Alabama, helping the Crimson Tide to the College World Series in 1950 before going on to spend 16 years in the major leagues with the New York and San Francisco Giants and the Minnesota Twins. During his first season with the Giants in 1953, he set a major league record by pitching shutouts in his first two games. He later became the head baseball coach at Liberty University, where he spent 13 years and compiled a record of 343-191-1.Click Here for Full Story
