LC baseball honors lost, splits twinbill with W&L

Baseball took a backseat for a few minutes Saturday at Fox Field as Lynchburg College’s team took time before its scheduled doubleheader against Washington & Lee to remember the passing of three members of its baseball family and an member of its extended family.

The Hornets asked for a moment of silence to honor Jeff Taylor Sr., Doug Knowles, Betty Spencer and ODAC official Jay Youngquist...Taylor Sr., the father of current LC player Jeff Taylor Jr., died tragically last April when he was struck by a batted ball while throwing batting practice for the Hornets.

After the moment of silence, Taylor Sr.’s father, Lloyd Taylor, threw out a pair of first pitches to his grandson. The first came from the mound and second came from the spot where Taylor Sr. was struck by the ball.

“LC has been really good with supporting me throughout the whole year since the loss of my dad,” Taylor Jr. said. “I couldn’t ask for anything more. My grandpa was here and he doesn’t get to watch us play much and he asked for me to catch them. My grandpa wanted it to be the last pitch he ever threw and he wanted it to be to family. It was very, very emotional.”

The team also dedicated a plaque to Taylor Sr. that will hang in the Hornets’ dugout. The plaque was on display along with a family photo album during the first game of the doubleheader.

Theyre supposd to have a ceremony for naming an atheltic training lab for Fumble end of April and theyll also be givign out the first Jeff Taylor Memorial Scholarship that day as well
