OK, I kind of alluded to this in the Marshall thread. But who do you see as the possible candidates for this job considering how short of notice Marshall is giving WU?

Image
Duane Reboul
Birmingham Southern's coach is available and not only does he know the league but he's also a great coach

Image
Buzz Peterson
Hey, you know he is looking and now we know he doesn't have a buyout clause in his contract. Wouldn't this just be rich?

Image
Bobby Cremins
Allegedly he threw his name into the hat for the CofC job. He would probably be thrilled to step into all of the talent in Rock Hill.

And my personal fave:

Image
Jeff Meyer
How great would it be to see the Eagles & Flames match up at Vines in this coaching duel. Come on, admit it. You'd love to see this happen. He was assistant to Marshall at WU from '99-'01 so he has the street cred in Rock Hill. And it'd be good for him to get away from another assistant gig under a head coach with a less than sparkling reputation (first Quin Snyder and now Kelvin Sampson).

I would love to see Jeff Meyer for obvious reasons. It would be must see TV!!!! Bobby Cremins would add some Cred to the Big South and even more to Winthrop. I still say Randy Peele will just get a promotion. No inside information there as I have not spoken to anyone in Rock Hill since the tournament.

They could do worse. But considering how much talent they have on campus, they should be able to attract someone better.

Be on the lookout for

Byron Samuels

In his first 4 years as the Highlanders coach he's racked up a blazing 34-52 record (20-26 in the BS!) They might be worried about him just using WU as a stepping stone though.

You never let up, LUconn.

Luconn hates the Highs for sure but it is funny. Randy Peele is meeting right now with the President of WU to discuss taking over the team. I don't know if he will get a long term deal or anything but he is meeting. I do have an inside source on this one

I've never been a Peele fan--he did "OK" at UNCG with the other guy's players. One scene to never forget, is Peele chasing the officials down the court and into the tunnel one year at the conf tourney. If he gets the gig, that can only be bad (long term) for all the WEF's.

I really think Barclay Radebaugh is the intriguing guy in all of this ...

I hear Barclay would love the WU job. He would get out of Charleston just as Gregg was coming into town. That would leave Chuck South in a bind for sure. Maybe Chuck South would then take Reboul.

Scar, you're forgetting the ubiquitous nature of Buzz Peterson. Not only is he a candidate for every coaching job in the state of SC, I understand that he's actually going to leave CCU so that he can coach at Coastal, Winthrop and Chuck Southern next year. I hear that Buzz is moving to Tampa and that the US military is helping him out by allowing him to use their CENTCOM command center there so that he can coach 3 teams at once via satellite uplink.

Sly, that really surprises me that Cremins would throw his name at the C of C job, I just can't see him coming back into the coaching ranks....He has some what of a TV gig with Lincoln Financial Sports now....

I don't think Cremins has any real interest. Cremins probably got his name thrown in because he has a home in Charleston and because he's good friends w/ John Kresse.

From the Charlotte fishwrap:
ANALYSIS
Hickman has list of possible successors
DENNY SEITZ
dseitz@charlotteobserver.com

Winthrop athletics director Tom Hickman knew this day would come.

He knew men's basketball coach Gregg Marshall wasn't likely to spend his entire career in Rock Hill and that the coach's success would one day draw him to bigger paychecks elsewhere.

So Tuesday, when Marshall announced he was leaving Winthrop and taking a job at the College of Charleston, it wasn't nearly the shock for Hickman that it was for many Eagles fans.

In fact, Hickman said at the end of the Eagles' 23-8 campaign that he always had a ready list of possible successors.

Still, how do you replace the most successful coach in your school's history?

Hickman wasn't talking Tuesday, declining comment when he was reached on vacation in Virginia.

But here are some of the names that are certainly worth discussion, beginning this morning.

ASSISTANT COACH RANDY PEELE

Peele was Marshall's lead assistant at Winthrop.

Peele is a former coach at UNC Greensboro, where he led the Spartans to an NCAA tournament berth in 1996. UNCG plays in the Southern Conference, same as College of Charleston.

Marshall said both his assistants, Peele and Paul Molinari, will be asked to join him in Charleston. Why would either decline? Perhaps if one was the leading candidate in Rock Hill.

ASSISTANT COACH PAUL MOLINARI

Molinari has never been a head coach, but Marshall lacked head coaching experience eight years ago when Hickman hired him.

Molinari spent much of his career learning from Rollie Massimino at Villanova and Cleveland State.

BARCLAY RADEBAUGH

Radebaugh is the coach at Charleston Southern, like Winthrop a Big South Conference school. Whether the Bucs would grant the Eagles permission to speak with Radebaugh is questionable.

If they do, he'd be an attractive option and one that might be popular with some of the Eagles players. Radebaugh recruited current Winthrop starters Torrell Martin and Phillip Williams.

SHAUN GOLDEN

Golden was a top assistant with the Eagles for seven years before taking the head coaching job at Newberry last year.

His Newberry team -- a Division II club -- came into Winthrop Coliseum and nearly upset the Eagles.

Golden was a former star player at the University of Georgia. His father, Louie Golden, coached at Riverside High near Greenville and is one of the all-time winningest coaches in S.C. prep history.

JEFF MEYER

Meyer is a former coach at Liberty University, where he led the Flames to the NCAA tournament in 1994. He was an assistant coach at Winthrop during Marshall's first four seasons, all of which ended with trips to the NCAA tournament.

Meyer was an assistant coach at Missouri last year under Quin Snyder, who quit midseason.

Given the time of year, with the July Camp-fest upcoming, I suspect they will stay in-house with Peele, but on an INTERIM basis to see how he does. Not all coaches will do well with the same talent--Gregg Marshall is exhibit A for that when he took over for Dan Kinney.

Despite what Scar is hearing, allegedly Jeff has inquired about the WU opening:
Marshall's successor? No need to look far
By Gary McCann · The Herald - Updated 06/29/06 - 12:55 AM

Randy Peele stood in the hallway a few feet from the basketball court at the Winthrop Coliseum as a line of campers filed in for the afternoon session of drills, lectures and games.

A little fellow in a bright yellow shirt and brighter smile stopped.

"So," he said to Peele, "are you the new coach?"

Peele smiled and shook his head. The kid laughed and walked on.

That was one of several questions Peele was fielding on Wednesday, the day after head coach Gregg Marshall announced he was leaving to take the head coaching job at College of Charleston.

Peele's cell phone was ringing like a church bell on Sunday. Coaches of recruits were calling. He had a recruit on campus. Other coaches were calling to find out what was going on.

"I've been focused on the kids," said Peele, who has been an assistant under Marshall the past three seasons. "I've been talking to their high school coaches, trying to do what's best for us and the kids."

That's all he can do at this point, until Winthrop officials finish what university President Anthony DiGiorgio has termed a "vigorous national search" open to "any and all people who think they're qualified."

It should be the shortest, least expensive search in Winthrop athletic history. I can tell them where to look. Walk into the coliseum, go down the hall to the basketball offices and go in the door with Peele's name on it. I think it's the fourth door on the left.

He wants the job, understands the situation and is the logical choice to help maintain what's been built over the past eight years under Marshall.

"Whoever gets the job," he said, "has a monumental task to be the caretaker of what Gregg's done."

Winthrop was fortunate Marshall stayed as long as he did and even more fortunate he did it the right way.

He emphasized academics and graduated players. This past spring, the team had a cumulative GPA of 2.8, highest ever for the basketball program. He was a presence in the community and sold his program. Attendance rose every season.

Oh yeah. He won 165 games, six Big South titles and went to the NCAA Tournament six times.

In the perfect world, Winthrop would pay whatever was necessary to keep him. But they weren't in that kind of position and never will be.

But Marshall didn't do it alone, particularly the past two years, when the program won 50 games.

Peele and fellow assistants Paul Molinari and Earl Grant were there, too. I watched enough practices, film sessions and games to tell you those are three of the hardest working coaches I've ever seen in 35 years of covering college basketball. It might be the Big South, but the workload is just as heavy and the desire to do it right just as high.

Someone has to keep that going, and Peele would like a shot.

But whatever happens with Winthrop's "search committee of two" -- DiGiorgio and director of athletics Tom Hickman -- Peele, Molinari and Grant won't be left out in the cold.

Marshall would love to have them at the College of Charleston. Grant, who is from North Charleston, has decided to make the move. All of them will have a job.

Molinari wants to be a head coach some day, but he's not going to step on Peele's toes and would be content in his current role of, as he says, "running the asylum." While Peele and Grant handled most of the recruiting, Molinari has taken care of the day-to-day operations, including academics. They've been as good a team off the floor as the Eagles have been on it.

Should Peele get the job, Molinari could stay or join Marshall. He bought a house about five months ago and has put down some roots in Rock Hill.

It's possible the search could go beyond the doors of the coliseum.

Jeff Meyer, the former head coach at Liberty University and an assistant at Winthrop under Marshall, has made inquiries even though he just took an assistant's job at Indiana University.

Barclay Radebaugh, the head coach at Charleston Southern, spent a couple of years at Winthrop with Marshall. He helped recruit some of the current players.

If there's a list, that's where it should end.

But no one knows the current situation better than Peele, and a Peele-Molinari combination is what the program needs.

They know the players. The players know them. And that should be enough to offset the uncertainty of what's going to happen without Marshall around. That should be enough to keep players from entertaining thoughts of transferring. That should be enough to keep the program going.

The job needs to be filled quickly. The July recruiting period begins next week. The players need to know who they'll be playing for.

And Peele needs to tell the kid in the yellow shirt he's the coach.

Randy Peele will get the job, he meets with the Presdent and AD Saturday morning at 8:00am... The players want Peele, it would get done earlier but they have camp this week. Meyer and Radebaugh are taking the politically correct approach, by publicly saying they are only interested if Winthrop contacts them first, but trust me both of them would love to have that job, especially Radebaugh. Two other names to mention Dave Dickerson from Tulane and Ryan Odom Virginia Tech.

Marshall will have 2 openings, don't be surprised if former LU grad John D. Jones ends up down at the College. He was a former assistant at Winthrop for Marshall. He is a very successful D-II Head Coach right now, but wants to move south.

Jones is a good friend of mine as well and I would love to see him come back to the Big South but if not, Charleston would be nice for him. He was on our staff in the mid 90's and then worked at Winthrop for a couple of years as well. He is up in NYC and the cost of living up there is murder so I know a move south would be great for him. IMO Peele will get it for 1 year and then get re-evaluated.
