Nevada pitcher dies after taken to hospital
RENO, Nev. (AP) - Nevada freshman pitcher Steve Masten died Tuesday after being rushed to the hospital the previous night.
"We are not going to talk about any of the details," athletic department spokeswoman Rhonda Lundin said, referring questions to the Washoe County Sheriff's Office, which did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
Earlier Tuesday, the Nevada announced that the Wolf Pack's game against Saint Mary's in Moraga, Calif., had been canceled because of Masten's hospitalization.
He was taken to Washoe Medical Center on Monday and was reported in critical condition Tuesday morning.
"Steven was a wonderful student-athlete with a bright future," Nevada coach Gary Powers said in a statement. "He will be deeply missed by everyone in the Wolf Pack baseball family. Our prayers and thoughts are with his family."
Nevada athletic director Cary Groth said in statement, "Our priority is to provide whatever support we can to his family, our student-athletes and coaching staff."
Masten was 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA this season.
The 6-foot-2, 210-pound left-hander played at Spanish Springs High School in Sparks and chose to attend Nevada out of high school after being recruited by UCLA, Pepperdine and Santa Clara.
