Why can most Carolina fans not admit that Dook was the best collegiate basketball team of our (meaning college kids) lifetime? It's the truth.

The natives are restless...nothing heats things up like ACC vs Big East or Duke versus the Tar Heels. Now that Marshall and RD are gone...so is any controversy.

Dude, look where I'm from. You live there now. Can you go a day without seeing Dook/Carolina/State/Wake crap on cars?

Because it passes the time? I grew up in Chapel Hill. I love nothing more than poking the locals with the proverbial stick.

In North Carolina, there's three things you don't talk about in public: Religion, Politics, and Big Four Basketball.

Yeah I guess, just seems you guys get really heated up about favorites from other schools, I don't know, I have favorites besides the school I went to, but I can't ever get passionate about another school. I'll admit I have no trouble hating certain ones though.

Enough to learn the stereotypes and which ones are true and not, at least.

Therefore, Scorcho is WRONG!!!
Alright. You got me. The bulk of their wins (again, in some arbitrary timeframe you've assigned) were non-conference. By 5 games. So were those 38 ACC wins not quality wins? Are ACC wins not worthy of the seed it earned them in the tournament? Were all of those non-conference teams overrated too? What a grand conspiracy that would be.
jmdickens wrote:Take notice of the ACC championships, never once did they play UNC…
How is it relevant who they were playing? A tournament championship is still a championship. How is it Duke's fault that UNC couldn't make it to the championship game? You don't get to control who you play in a tourney, last time I checked. Oh wait. Yes you do. When you win the ACC regular season championship. Or was their ACC schedule overrated?
jmdickens wrote:Dooks wins do include St. Johns, Georgetown, Davidson, and Temple….wow!!
Um, yeah. I'm pretty sure we do have wins against those schools in a hundred years of basketball. What's your point? Are you talking about some specific time frame again?
jmdickens wrote:what is it 6 sweet sixteens in a row....if you play kansas city community college and Florida A&M in the first two rounds, alot more teams could claim that record....OVERRATED
I'm sorry that Doherty couldn't get it done for you guys for those few years, but Carolina has played their fair share of easy roads to the Sweet 16 (and beyond).

Once again a Carolina fan hears the word "Duke" and starts foaming at the mouth, completely missing the point. You can hate Duke all of you want, but if you say they're overrated based on the quality of their wins, you're talking smack about your own wins as well. We're in the same conference for (just under) half of our schedules. Either the ACC is quality, or it is not. You can't pick and choose how you feel about the ACC based on your anti-Duke bias.

I'm done with hijacking this thread. I don't think I can argue my point effectively anyway. I'll save you the trouble of replying, though. Christian Laettner was crybaby, Bobby Hurley was even worse than him, JJ Redick was gay, Coach K has a foul mouth and the Blue Devils get all of the calls.

Okay, the first point of the argument was about how Dook is on TV when they play the worst schools while several other good schools don't get TV time....explain it to me scorcho.

second, I can argue that Dook was not that good.....

say, the whole ACC was a weak conference, then where were Dooks quality wins???

now say they are a good conference, then what were there out of conference quality wins???

Then last year, a weak conference, and one quality win got them a #6 seed.....yeah, they earned it by being Dook, nothing actually to do with the game of basketball, only with the name on the jersey...

I also like the argument that if one is good, they all are.....

So, Winthrop was good only because the rest of the Big South was good.....good Scorcho

okay, SJ, I'll admit it......Dook did alot better after Dean Smith left and Roy Williams arrived, but that is not my lifetime entire lifetime.

I don't think that dook is overrated.....rather, over-hyped....and I believe there is a difference. They are a good team & have a great program. They dominated the conference from '97 to roughly '04, '05. No one can argue....and that's a heck of a run. During that time span, UNC went through 3 coaching changes...so that helped elevate dook.

To me, it's never been the amount of wins dook has that creates the "hatred". UCLA has 11 championships, but UNC fans don't loathe them. To me, it's more about the condescension surrounding dook. That was not there until K showed up. Someone summed it up best when they wrote this:

"It's not k's arrogance that's so disgusting, it's his condescension. Yes, Roy Williams is arrogant too, but he's at least appropriately gracious about it.

I really believe that k thinks himself to be the ultimate persona, and that he is sacrificing much greater accomplishments to be "just" the basketball coach at dook, and it pisses him off that everyone else doesn't recognize this.

His career has been parlayed from the success and image of Carolina and Dean Smith. He got the players by associating dook with UNC, and he runs an unsophisticated, un-original system that, when using star players is very, very good, but when using so-so players is only, well, so-so.

His record obviously gets him the 'Hall of Fame' label, and he's deserving of that. He's not a bum of a basketball coach, but his impression of himself is lost on me and a lot of other people who view him as a seeker of self-centered recognition and not a person who seeks to take what abilities he has to form or enhance recognition of others.

Humility is not always the ultimate goal, but humility is ALWAYS a part of the ultimate achievement.

He couldn't spell humility if it started with 5 consenants."
