Musselman volleyball players go Hawaiian
By Nate Maczuzak, Journal sports writer
INWOOD - Two Musselman volleyball players demonstrated such dominance on the hardwood this past season that the pair earned a rare trip to Hawaii to compete in the Club U.S.A. Volleyball Championships in early July.
The pair of Applemen standouts, outsider hitter Erica Manor and setter Kayla Johns, managed to distinguish themselves from a nationwide pool of players during the highly competitive selection process and earn a spot in the event on the sun-drenched island of Honolulu nearly 5,000 miles across the continental United States and into the middle of the Pacific Ocean for a week's worth of sun, fun and volleyball.
"It was awesome," Johns said. "We went up there, met the team right off the plane. I had girls from all over: New York, Maryland, Nevada, South Dakota, New Mexico, Alaska, Arizona, Washington."
"It was kind of crazy since I was playing libero instead of setter," said Johns, who tried to neutralize the powerful outsider hitter by using her intimate knowledge of Manor's game plan when the Applemen teammates where pitted against each other in Honolulu. "It was fun because I know her tendencies, but her team was really good. They never let anything touch the ground."Click Here for Full Story
Where Musselman ran into an immovable object in Parkersburg in last year's state finals, Manor and her Hawaiian teammates were able to move their competition en route to racking up the tournament title as the Liberty University-bound rising senior continued to show her on-court dominance. Manor has given her oral commitment to play volleyball at Liberty.
