HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Liberty University has been awarded the Big South Conference’s George F. “Buddy” Sasser Cup Trophy for the 2007-08 athletic season, its first title since 2002-03 and sixth overall. The Cup was presented to Liberty Thursday evening at the League’s annual Spring Meetings Awards and Hall of Fame Dinner at The Sea Pines Resort on Hilton Head Island, S.C.

In 2007-08, Liberty averaged 9.97 Sasser Cup points and accumulated a total of 169.50 points based on its finish in Conference championships, winning by 0.47 over second-place Coastal Carolina University. The Flames won eight Big South championships in 2007-08, winning in football, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s soccer, volleyball, men’s indoor track, women’s basketball and men’s outdoor track. In addition, Liberty finished runner-up in three Conference championships as well.

Coastal Carolina, which had won the last four Sasser Cups, finished second in the race with a 9.50 average and totaled 161.50 points, eight overall points behind Liberty. Winthrop was third at 8.44, followed by High Point (7.38) and Radford (7.21).

The Flames earned the Men’s All-Sports Trophy with its average of 9.61 (86.5 points overall in nine sports), edging out Coastal Carolina’s 9.00 average (72 points overall in eight sports). Liberty won five regular-season and tournament titles in men’s competition to win its first Men’s All-Sports Trophy since 2004-05 and third overall. Winthrop was third in the Men’s All-Sports race with its 8.00 average (64 total points in eight sports).

Liberty also won its first-ever Women’s All-Sports Trophy, finishing with an average of 10.38 points and 83 overall points in eight women’s sports. Coastal Carolina was second with an average of 9.94 (89.5 points in nine sports), followed by Winthrop at 8.83 (79.5 points in nine sports). Liberty is the first Big South member institution to sweep all three awards since Coastal Carolina in 2005-06.

The Sasser Cup Trophy, named for former Big South Commissioner Buddy Sasser, is awarded to the Big South member institution with the most successful year athletically based on an average points system. Points are awarded based on both regular-season and tournament finish in each of the League’s 18 championships, based on the number of teams participating in the regular-season and tournament, respectively. A school must be eligible to participate in a specific sport championship to receive Sasser Cup points in that sport. There shall be a weighted factor of 1.5 for those sports that only participate in regular-season play (football) or a tournament (cross country, track, golf), but not both. Teams tied in regular-season or tournament play shall split the points earned.

Wow, it's been over 20 years since any current conference member other than LU or Coastal has won this thing!

He said current conference member, meaning Campbell and UNCG don't apply.

Makes you grateful to be a flamefan when you think that UNCA, RU and CSU have been in the BSC as long or longer than we have and have never won, and I don't think have really come close. If you go back far enough, RU had a good run in WBB and Men's soccer. CSU has won a couple of championships in MBB and has had some good golf and tennis teams. UNCA? A fluke championship in baseball and a well-earned one in MBB. Not much else. Some of the individual programs, like UNCA's T&F teams, are so bad it's hard to even laugh about it. You almost have to just pity them. We really are blessed. :pbjtime
