Castro Announces Wrestling Transfer

May 8, 2006
Lynchburg, Va.

Liberty University head wrestling coach Jesse Castro has announced that former Rider wrestler Timmy Harner has transferred to Liberty for the spring semester. Harner will be a part of the program’s reinstated squad that is scheduled to return to competition in 2006-07 and he will have three years of eligibility with Liberty.

Harner spent the freshman year of his collegiate career at Rider University in 2004-05, where he tied for the most wins on the nationally ranked Broncs with 26 victories. During the season, competing at 141 lbs., the Norristown, Pa. native took first at the Keystone Classic, third at the prestigious Beast of the East tournament and sixth at the Mat Town tournament. Seeded second going into Colonial Athletic Association tournament, Harner took an early fall, but was able wrestle back to a third-place finish. He then qualified for nationals as a true freshman in St. Louis where he lost to two all-americans, while posting a victory. Following the national tournament, Harner was ranked 17th in the country by Intermat.

Harner, a four-year letterwinner at Norristown Area High School, finished his high school wrestling career with a 167-15 mark, breaking the Pennsylvania District I win record under the guidance of his uncle Steve Harner. A four-time Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state qualifier, Harner was a three-time state medalist, finishing fifth as a sophomore and third as both a junior and senior.

As a sophomore, he placed third at the Junior Nationals and was ranked eighth nationally by Wrestling USA Magazine among freshmen and sophomores. In his senior season, Harner was ranked 10th in the country in all weight classes by Wrestling International News Magazine. In addition, the wrestler also qualified for the all-state academic team and was a member of the National Honor Society his junior and senior seasons.

Harner enrolled at Liberty this past January, where he is majoring in elementary education and will be a part of the Flames wrestling program this fall.

There is an even better transfer that will be announced soon, a guy who is a 2-time All-American from a Big 10 school. Castro is building a strong team right out of the gate.

I think we WILL see some early success- what is amazing is the potential here, with 25 freshman and two sophs, NO other upperclassmen! WOW- think how tough this team will be in 2 years!
