Liberty Men Win 2006 New Balance Big South Indoor Track Championship; Womens Finish Second
February 25, 2006 · Clemson, S.C.

The Liberty men and the Coastal Carolina women won the 2006 New Balance Big South Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships this afternoon at the Clemson Indoor Track Facility in Clemson, S.C. The Flames won with a total of 196 points, while the Chanticleers captured 232.5 points for the Big South Title.

The Lady Flames tallied 142.5 points for second-place, while Radford took third with 81 points. Winthrop (61) placed fourth, followed by Charleston Southern (58), High Point (34), UNC Asheville (31) and VMI (20).

Liberty’s men won with 196 points, followed by Radford (146), Charleston Southern (112), VMI (68), High Point (56), Winthrop (50) and UNC Asheville (29).

Liberty’s Josh McDougal won Men’s Outstanding Track Performer honors notching wins in the mile run and 3,000 meters for the Flames. Radford’s Brian Richotte won the Men’s Outstanding Field Performer after claiming a title in the weight throw and placing third in the shot put.

Liberty’s Arlene Zelinskas was named Women’s Outstanding Track Performer with a win in the pentathlon recording 3,345 points. She also won the 60-meter hurdles with a Big South record time of 8.64 in the event. Coastal Carolina’s Chasity Johnson and Tiffany Evans of Radford earned Women’s Co-Outstanding Field Performer honors. Johnson took first in the long jump with a NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 6.10 meters, a League record. She also took first in the triple jump with a leap of 12.48 meters. Evans placed first in the weight throw with a NCAA provisional qualifying throw of 19.35 meters to set a Conference record. She also finished No. 1 in the shot put with a mark of 14.57 meters.

Radford’s Shemila Brandon took home Freshman of the Year honors for the women finishing second in both the long jump and the triple jump. Taili Evans of VMI picked up Freshman of the Year accolades for the men, finishing first in the long jump (7.10 meters), while posting a triple jump of 13.47 meters for fifth place.

Coastal Carolina’s Alan Connie won Coach of the Year honors for the women, and Glenn Terry of Radford brought home the Coach of the Year for the men. Winthrop’s Carrie Sellmer was the women’s Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Kevin Sullivan of VMI was named the Big South’s Men’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

McDougal Claims Victory To Highlight Flames ECAC/IC4A Championship First Day Results

Josh McDougal claimed victory in the 3000 meters as the sophomore ran a course record in the event to highlight Liberty’s first day results at the ECAC/IC4A Championships held in Boston, Mass.

After the first day’s competition, the women’s team stands tied for 20th out of 34 teams at the ECAC Championship with five points at the event being held at Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center. The men’s team is tied for seventh out of 51 teams at the IC4A Championship in the event hosted at Boston University’s Track and Field Pavilion.

In the men’s 3000 meters, Josh McDougal finished almost 14 seconds ahead of Providence’s Martin Fagan as McDougal finished the race with a time of 7:53.16, besting a course record that has stood since 1981 when Villanova’s Sidney Maree finished with a time of 7:54.91.

Also finishing for the Flames were Ravanno Ferguson, who placed sixth in the 55 meters with a time of 6:41, Jarvis Jelen, who placed 14th with a time of 4:12.60 in the one mile, Philip Leinweber, who placed seventh in the 500 meters with a time of 1:04.14, and Jordan McDougal, who placed 14th in the 5000 meters with a time of 14:31.45.

In the women’s championship, Arlene Zelinskas highlighted the Lady Flames’ finishers as she finished fourth in the pentathlon with 3,630 points, while the women’s 4x400 team of Mynique Robinson, Tra’ Screen, Kena Butts and Jaime Watson finished sixth with a time of 3:47.93.

Also finishing for the Lady Flames were Kena Butts, who finished 10th in the high jump (1.65m), Carol Jefferson, who finished 11th in the 5000 meters (17:15.95) and Andrea Beckles, who finished 22nd in the 60 meters (7.93).

The Liberty University men’s and women’s track and field programs concluded competition today at the IC4A and ECAC championships, finishing 17th and 27th, respectively, in the regional championships held in Boston, Mass.

Highlighting the weekend-long event was meet record by Josh McDougal as the sophomore won the 3000 meters by finishing almost 14 seconds ahead of Providence’s Martin Fagan. According to the athletics website he also finished 4th in the 5000 for an All American honor. He is now a 5 time All American (2 for XC and 3 for indoor track) and he is only a sophomore
