The Lady Eagles have been soaring high in the Big South for the past 5 years, but tonight they could get too close to the sun and fall from their lofty heights as #1 Winthrop-who has struggled the past few matches being taken to 5 at both CSU and Radford-visits #2 Liberty that has not dropped a game in 9 matches.
LETS GO LADY FLAMES!!!

Radford’s Two-Game Rally Not Enough
RADFORD, Va.—Radford volleyball fought off match point and rallied to take two games from Winthrop, but it wasn’t enough as the Eagles won game five to defeat Radford 3-2 (30-17, 37-35, 29-31, 22-30, 15-4) in a Big South match Friday night at the Dedmon Center.
The Highlanders (8-18, 3-6 Big South) game three win was the first time RU has won a game over Winthrop since the 2001 season. Five-time defending Big South champions, the Eagles (14-9, 8-0 Big South) won their 63rd match over a Big South foe.

I'm worn out from the football game. I had planned on going, but I'm just too tired.

winthrop's jerseys are awful looking. waht the hell are they thinking having collared jerseys?? i've never seen a team sport jersey that looked good with collars, especially not volleyball!

No only does Liberty sweep tonight, but the girls get to play in front of a Big South record crowd for volleyball. Tonight was a lot of fun. Those girls have so much talent. I am almost convinced that Nicki Scripko is some sort of a blonde ninja wielding a volleyball.

Tennis can pull off the collars...volleyball, not so much.
Anyway, GO LADY FLAMES!!!! WOOHOO!!! If only they could've gotten this win while I was covering them for the Champion...oh well, better late than never. GO LIBERTY!!! WOOHOO!!!
WOW!!!

You know having seen a couple matches on TV now...I must say Nicki has this level of intensity on the court that is unmatched. You would not expect someone as nervous as she was in my interview with her to be that hardcore once you put em out on the court.
One observation though about the whole team. It seemed like not only were they gaining confidence with each point in their favor, but they just fed off that crowd. They really got into it as they got closer and closer. Now I missed the final point so from anyone there, what was the general reaction of the players after they closed it out

Thats funny...I'm with you...maybe she's Chuck Norris or something...I dunno but those last two kills she had (when she was a little mad according to VA) were two of the hardest balls I've seen hit in the Vines Center I looked around and everyone's jaw is dropped, nobody could believe what they just saw (I understand I said that a few weeks ago...but at the time those were the hardest balls...now the bar has been raised again)
they could not do ANYTHING with our blocks...tip tip tip tip
Another great sight was seeing how LU won with class and you would never know it was a big game until they took it to the locker room...not to mention how great WU was after defeat...they showed class that I havent seen by any other BS school...you can tell they are instilling character into their athletes...and character will show face in games, not just off the court...they have great leadership and for what I can tell very nice athletes.
This folks is going to be a rivalry for many years to come...Volleyball is just starting to get attention around the country (mainly b/c of the rally point scoring) and you'll start seeing crowds that people would never have imagined for volleyball 20 years ago
I still cant get over what I saw, that was awesome and I met my match with Chelaine's dad...he may out yell me!

What a match! I think I may have lost my voice. Our front line was throwing a "block Party". All cylinders were firing like a well oiled machine! I talked with both the coach and the AD after the game and they were very proud of the girls. The crowd was amazing and VERY loud. I was looking forward to putting faces to names on this board but nobody could tell me who was who. Anyway, this weekend was a great ride, I will be back for the Big South Tourny.

Congrats to LU...I've been impressed how WU has been able to keep the streak going this year, but I knew this would be the biggest roadblock, and it definitely turned out to be the case. If the streak had to end, I'm glad it ended against a good squad like LU, and not someone like CSU (like it almost did). The Flames are definitely clicking on all cylinders and I'd have to say they are the team to beat now...but I definitely won't be surprised to see these two teams meet in the finals in Lynchburg in mid-November. We'll see what happens then.

Hey, let's not take anything away from your girls either. That first game was as close as close gets and they even battled strong in the second. I think about halfway through that game and in the third game the crowd was really helping take them out of it. It got loud in there.
It was definitely louder than any men's basketball game I've been to in the Vines in a while.

Hats off to WinthropEagleFan. You seem like a really classy guy. Your team showed a lot of class last night, too. They gathered together with our ladies for a postgame prayer when they could easily have let the disappointment of the streak ending make them just head right out. I spoke to Sitzman and your libero after the game complimenting them on their play and their class, and they showed the mark of true champions, they smiled and said "We'll be back."
I'm sure that we will see you guys again in a few weeks.

I found this interesting little tidbit in the SID wrapup of the match:
Scripko not only ended the match with her kill, but she had gotten things started by singing the national anthem for the second-straight evening, to help celebrate Parents’ Weekend. The freshman totaled a team-high 14 kills, 11 digs and six blocks, recording her 11th double-double
.
