Cycling Team/Club?

Any information on an LU cycling team or club? Most universities list cycling as a club sport, but I can't find anything on LU web site. I assumed that with all the pub regarding the new trails on the mountain that we would have at least a club. Would love to know if we have a competitive team for any cycling category: Road, MTB, XC or Track. Any contact info would be appreciated.

Bringing my son up with me for commencement this year and would love for him to get a chance to ride with a group from the college if possible.

Thanks!

I know there was talk of possibly starting up a mountain bike club but I haven't heard any further. We have posters on this board who would know the status of any clubs. Hopefully they'll chime in.

Thanks Sly. I think the level of organized cycling, especially if it includes competitive events and not just rallies or club rides, would heavily influence my son. He has been pouring over the copy of the new LJ and seems excited about coming up to visit in the Spring.

The crazy thing is that the Lynchburg area is the perfect setting for a road team. I wish I regularly rode back when I was in Lynchburg. There are some spectacular rides nearby ... especially if you are properly conditioned.

That doctor got hit by a car last year and died riding his bike and the whole "bikers lane" issue was pretty hot issue.

I don't know if the LU bike team is still around. I do see a guy going up the mountain with a Liberty biking shirt on. He looks like he's part of a team.

My question about the cycling team was two-fold: to get a chance to ride with the team, but also to figure out if they ever made a team kit (sounds like they did). I would love to score one of those for him to help "close the deal" on his choice of colleges. Granted, he has 4 more years to decide and I'm not complaining that UT is at the top of his list, but I would love for him to get immersed in the LU culture.

yeah, sorry, I should have been more specific. It wasn't just like a LU biking T shirt. It was an actual jersey that you might see on a Sunday afternoon at some kind of Mountain Dew event. They look pretty nice.

Those are pretty sweet. But I seriously doubt they come in sizes factoring in my gut (insert tailgate jersey jokes here).

Any chance this team could be revived?

The reason the team ended originally like it did was because the president (greg), mechanic (joe) and treasurer (travis) all graduated leaving Lynchburg, and I being the Website moderator (jon) on the team was not ready to take on all the responsibilities to keep it going.

Its been tried to be revived without the original 4 founders already, but the leader wasn't solid enough to keep it going and unfortunately driving a few of the dedicated few away from it all. It will take a very mature dedicated group to do it again. I think with the new addition of the trails and growing numbers at Liberty there is a huge chance the colors can fly on wheels again.

**ps. greg and joe now both have moved back to Lynchburg so now is better than ever to get in contact with any info you need to get everything back in action again.

Unfortunately, I cannot remember which email address through which I contacted you. Was it from my liberty.edu account? If so, I am not seeing anything from you. You can also reach me at gregsand@att.net

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I was amazed at all of the hoops I had to jump through on campus to find someone who knew anything about the team. Of course, I should have gone through the flamefans hook-up first, right Sly?

Looking forward to riding with you guys in the Spring!

Greg

I understand the trials with keeping a program alive. Here in Houston we have a huge road crowd, but the track crowd is probably around 50 regulars. Sly knows the condition of our facility and the struggle that we have getting headlines and publicity, even with the fact that we have several current and former national champions and Olympians at our facility.

Would love to be able to support the team/club in any way we can, which I know is limited from down here in Texas.

I have absolutely no idea where that email came from. If you don't mind, can you forward your reply to the address above or to gwsanders@liberty.edu ?

Thanks!
