LU took care of UNCA like they've taken care of pretty much everyone recently in the vines...3 games to 0

Anyone who saw the first game that was VERY close, could see they are a scrappy bunch. Dont let their record fool you they play a lot of teams tough, and Winthrop couldnt even finish them in 3.

Game 1: 30-24
Game 2: 30-11
Game 3: 30-10

We broke their spirit after the first game

Great job girls...you have a lot of people talking in the Vines saying its been a LONG LONG time since they've seen a volleyball team like this...not to mention I keep thinking about what teams are thinking when they keep seeing what we're doing to teams here and then they'll have to come visit...not to mention BSC here in the vines....it's gonna be fun!

Awful quiet amongst those who were questioning/asking for Coach Pinder's head last year...

Yeah, those that follow the program are seeing what they knew would happen...he just had to get his recruits in, he just didnt have very many Scolly's to give and had to play with those that were already here...now your seeing his girls leading the way. He came in to late to recruit his first year, last year was the first time you could actually see girls that fit his program and style. This years recruits are even better....and next year we're even better than that with one of the best setters in the country and hopefully a big banger

Villanova's coach called Bogg's (HS Sr setter) the best setter he's seen in the country in that class...we all know Kal's not going on the bench...it just gives us that many more options and opportunities to run different offenses

Dont get it twisted...Kal's the glue right now that's giving the other 6 girls over 100 kills the opportunity.

Interesting stats after this match:

This is Liberty's 4th consecutive sweep

Liberty has now won 12 of their last 16 matches dating back to the Wright State tournament

Of those 12 wins, 6 have come via the 3 game sweep, 5 have gone 4 games. and only one went the full distance

In today's victory, LU set the season low for points allowed in a single game with 10 in game 3. The lowest WAS 11 points which came in Gane 2 vs Howard in the opener and Game 2 against UNCA today.

Jessica Nelson celebrated her 22nd birthday by notching a team high 12 kills

Nicki Scripko notched double digit kills for the 8th consecutive match

Birthday Girl Nelson Leads Lady Flames to 3-0 Triumph Over UNC Asheville

October 14, 2007
Lynchburg, Va.

» Box Score

Liberty redshirt junior Jessica Nelson, celebrating her birthday Sunday afternoon at the Vines Center, propelled the Lady Flames to a 3-0 (30-24, 30-11, 30-10) sweep of UNC Asheville. Nelson’s match-high 12 kills helped Liberty sweep its fourth-consecutive match.

The Lady Flames, who hit .320 as a team against the Bulldogs, are now 14-7 overall and 5-1 in the Big South Conference. Liberty owns sole possession of second place in the conference standings, one match behind 6-0 Winthrop. Meanwhile, UNC Asheville falls to 6-17 overall and 0-6 in conference action. The Bulldogs have lost their last nine matches in succession.

Head coach Shane Pinder’s Lady Flames, who have won four in a row and six out of their last seven tilts, are in the midst of their longest winning streak since a five-match winning skein in October 2004. Additionally, Liberty has swept four-consecutive opponents by 3-0 scores for the first time since November 1999.

The match did not appear to be headed for a 3-0 Liberty victory throughout much of the opening game. The score was tied 14 times and the lead changed hands on five occasions. A 5-1 UNC Asheville scoring burst, spearheaded by the serving of freshman Rachel Guinane and featuring two kills by classmate Kelsey Benorden, posted the Bulldogs to a 19-15 edge.

The Bulldog lead was 20-16 when Pinder called a timeout to regroup the Lady Flames. Whatever he said in the huddle proved to be effective, as Liberty ran off six-straight points, retaking the advantage for good. Lady Flame freshman Nicki Scripko (RS/OH, Fayetteville, N.C.) provided a block assist and two kills during the surge. Her kills tied the score and gave Liberty a 21-20 lead.

Nelson (OH, Tokyo, Japan) put the finishing touches on Liberty’s 30-24 game one victory with a kill, one of five for her in the opening stanza. Chelaine McCarty (So., MB, Houston, Ala.) paced all players with seven kills during the first game, while Karyl Bacon (Fr., OH/DS, Temecula, Calif.) and UNC Asheville’s Brooke Holliday posted seven digs apiece....

Boggs can also play outside hitter as well. She definitely brings in a lot of versatility for next season.

Yes, game three against UNCA may have been the most complete game I have ever seen an LU team play. Very impressive! Of course now the key is consistancy. They have to play like this every game.
