LIBERTY 2, UNC WILMINGTON 1

WILMINGTON, N.C. - Junior striker Joshua Boateng scored twice as Liberty edged UNC Wilmington, 2-1, in the final game of the UNCW/Jameson Inn Classic Sunday at the UNCW Soccer Stadium. The College of Charleston won the tournament title following its 2-1 win over Coastal Carolina earlier in the day.

The Flames, who dropped a 2-0 decision on Friday to Charleston, upped their mark to 4-1 while the Seahawks slipped to 1-3-1 on the season.

Boateng netted the game-winner in the 80th minute when he received a short pass from senior Adrian Bumbut in a 3-on-2 break, settled the ball and fired a shot inside the far post past a diving UNCW goalkeeper.

It was the second on the afternoon that the duo of Boateng and Bumbut combined on a goal after Bumbut found Boateng open on a cross in the 12th minute of the game for a 1-0 Liberty lead.

The Seahawks had tied the game at 1-all in the 69th minute on freshman Daniel Roberts' second goal of the season. Sophomore Kirk Hudgins fed a streaking Roberts with a chip pass into the penalty area. Roberts then beat the LU goalkeeper with a high shot inside the near post.

UNCW had opportunities to draw even in the final minutes, but shots by sophomore David Acosta and junior Will Friesinger sailed over the cross bar.

Liberty held a 10-5 advantage in shots.

The Flames open a three-match homestand on Sept. 19, when they host Longwood in a 3 p.m. kickoff. The Seahawks, meanwhile, will host in-state rival UNC Greensboro on Sept. 22 at 7 p.m.

The stat that really stuck out to me was they had 1 shot on goal the entire game. Nice job defensively against a descent Colonial conference team. Good competition in that conference. Nice win!
