Liberty Women’s Tennis Announces The Signing of Four For 2006

December 5, 2005 · Lynchburg, Va.

The Liberty women’s tennis team has announced the addition of four new student-athletes to the team for Spring of 2006.

“With the addition of these four players, this maybe the strongest collection of talent the women’s program has had since its inception in 2000,” stated Liberty assistant tennis coach Alejandra Aguilar.

Transferring to Liberty for the Spring term are Natalia Nosova and Erica Fredstrom. The two players will provide maturity and experience to an otherwise young Liberty squad which will include three freshmen. Nosova, a native of Pervouralsk, Russia, attended school in her native country last year and will have three years of eligibility remaining, while Fredstrom, a native of North Dakota, played at the University of North Dakota-Grand Forks, where last season, she played #3 singles and #1 doubles. She will also have three years of eligibility remaining.

The two will be joined by freshmen Katerina Kunetsova and Livia Branco. Kunetsova, a native of Krasnogorsk, Russia, is currently ranked #1 in the Moscow region and #97 in all of Russia. Branco is a native of Sao Paulo, Brazil and continues the tradition of players from her native country in the Liberty program.

The Lady Flames open Spring match play on Saturday, February 4th as they host George Washington indoors at the Sports Racket.

Women’s Tennis Team Picked Sixth In Big South Preseason Poll

January 20, 2006 · Charlotte, N.C.

The Liberty University women’s tennis team has been predicted to finish sixth in the Big South Conference as the league released it annual preseason poll yesterday evening which is voted on by the conference’s head women’s tennis coaches and Sports Information Directors.

Winthrop women’s tennis team was chosen first in the Big South Conference’s annual preseason poll after garnering 13 out of a possible 16 first place votes and 125 out of a possible 128 points. They have won the Big South crown nine times.

The Lady Flames received 56 points including two second place votes, while being picked sixth. Liberty returns a young women’s team with no seniors on its roster. Junior Jonita Randolph (Townsville, S.C.) will once again lead the Lady Flames as the program enters its sixth year of competition.

The Lady Flames kickoff their 2006 schedule by hosting UNC Greensboro indoors at the Sports Racket on February 6 at 6:30 p.m. The season is schedule to conclude at the Big South Conference Women’s Tennis Championship from April 13-15 on the campus of Birmingham-Southern.

Despite singles victories by Dina Senkina and Katerina Kuznetsova, the Liberty Lady Flames dropped a 5-2 decision to the UNC Greensboro Spartans, Saturday night, indoors at the Sports Racket.

Senkina (Fr., Moscow, Russia) defeated UNC Greenboro’s Emily Wade 6-3, 6-4 in #2 singles in her first team match for the Lady Flames. Kuznetsova (Fr., Krasnogorsk, Russia), also playing in her first team match for Liberty, scored a 6-2, 6-2 win over UNC Greenboro’s Whitney Miles.

In doubles, Lady Flames Jonita Randolph (Jr., Townsville, S.C.) and Martyna Hanusz (So., Stalowa Wola, Poland) teamed for an 8-6 win over UNC Greensboro’s Erica Zabkas and Miles in #2 doubles. Davidson Defeats Lady Flames

February 18, 2006 · Davidson, N.C.

Davidson dropped just one match in a 6-1 victory over the visiting Liberty Lady Flames in
women’s tennis action Saturday at the Knobloch Tennis Center.

The Wildcats opened the dual winning each of the three doubles’ matches to grab an early 1-0 team advantage.

In singles play, Davidson won five of the six matches in straight sets.

The Lady Flames’ Dina Senkina (Fr., Moscow, Russia) secured the only point for Liberty by defeating Wildcat freshman Michelle Fanney, 1-6, 6-2, 6-4, in the #2 singles match.

It was Liberty's first road match of the season.

The win improved the Wildcats to 4-3 overall, while Liberty falls to 0-2 to begin the spring season.

The Flames next entertain in-state foe Mary Washington indoors at the Sports Racket next Saturday. Match time is set for 6:30 p.m.

Lady Flames Roll Past Mary Washington For First Victory Of Season

February 25, 2006 · Lynchburg, Va.

The Liberty Lady Flames won eight of the nine matches contested on the evening in picking up their first win of the season, downing the Mary Washington Eagles, 6-1, Saturday night, indoors at the Sports Racket.

The Lady Flames opened the night by sweeping all three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. Dina Senkina (So. Moscow, Russia) and Ekaterina Kuznetsova (Fr., Krasnogorsk, Russia) defeated the Eagles’ Katie Miglin and Natalia Fugate, 8-3, in #1 doubles, while Jonita Randolph (Jr., Townville, S.C.) and Martyna Hanusz (So., Stalowa Wola, Poland) recorded an 8-4 victory over Rebecca Morse-Karzen and Kelsey Mansmann in the #2 doubles match. Erica Fredstrom (Fr., Grand Forks, N.D.) and Livia Branco (Fr., Sao Paulo, Brazil) completed the doubles sweep with an 8-4 win in #3 doubles.

In singles, Liberty took five of six matches for the team victory. Randolph at #1, Senkina at #2 and Kuznetsova at #3, all posted two-set wins. Hanuzs at #4 would be extended to three sets, before defeating Mary Washington’s Katherine Malpeli, 6-1, 2-6, 6-1, while teammate Fredstrom took her match at #5 singles in a tiebreaker, 5-7, 7-5 (10-4), over the Eagles’ Gayle Smith.

With the victory, Liberty is now 1-2 on the season, while Mary Washington falls 2-2.

The Lady Flames next host George Washington indoors this coming Saturday at the Sports Racket. Match time is set for 6:30 p.m.

Lady Flames Down George Washington To Even Season Record

For the second week in a row, the Liberty Lady Flames used strong singles play to defeat the George Washington Colonials, 6-1, Saturday night, indoors at the Sports Racket and even their season mark at 2-2.

The Lady Flames opened the night by winning the doubles point. Jonita Randolph (Jr., Townsville, S.C.) and Martyna Hanusz (So., Stalowa Wola, Poland) combined to win at #2 doubles, 8-1 over George Washington’s Mara Frisch and Madhuri Jha. Livia Branco (Fr., Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Erica Fredstrom (Grand Forks, N.D.) then claimed the doubles point for Liberty by taking a close match at #3 doubles from the Colonials’ pair of Rachel Honig and Leah Woodard in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (7-4).

In singles for the second week in a row, Liberty took five of the six matches for the team victory. Lady Flames Make It Three Straight With Victory Over Virginia Intermont

March 8, 2006 · Lynchburg, Va.

The Liberty Lady Flames won every match played to sweep the Virginia Intermont Cobras, 7-0, and win their third straight match, Wednesday afternoon at the E.C. Glass High School Tennis Courts.

The Lady Flames won all three doubles contests to begin the match including a default at #3 doubles.

Liberty then won all five single matches contested and received a default in the #6 singles match. The Lady Flames won each match in two sets and only dropped two games total throughout singles play.

The victory is Liberty’s third straight and runs its season mark to 3-2.

The Lady Flames next begin Big South match play with a visit Saturday to Coastal Carolina. The match is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Chanticleers Remain Unbeaten By Snapping Lady Flames Win Streak

Coastal Carolina remained undefeated Saturday, after a 5-2 victory over Liberty in Big South match play, snapping the Lady Flames' three match winning streak.

The defeat evens Liberty's mark at 3-3 overall and drops to 0-1 in the Big South, while Coastal Carolina moves to 13-0 overall and 3-0 in the Big South Conference.

The Lady Chanticleers swept the doubles to take a 1-0 lead.

Coastal Carolina then took four of the six matches in singles' play to snap the Lady Flames' three match win streak.

The Lady Flames next square off with Charleston Southern Monday afternoon in a Big South Conference play. Match time is set for Noon.

Lady Flames Edged By Lady Buccaneers

March 13, 2006 · Charleston, S.C.

The Charleston Southern Lady Buccaneers claimed the all important doubles point and then split the six singles matches to squeeze past the Liberty Lady Flames, 4-3, Monday.

The Lady Buccaneers took the doubles point by winning two of the three doubles matches contested. Jonita Randolph (Jr., Townville, S.C.) and Martyna Hanusz (So., Stola Wala, Poland) claimed the Lady Flames only doubles victory at #2 doubles.
Down 1-0, Liberty came up a point short for team victory, splitting the six contested singles matches. The Lady Flames rallied for three single victories by Dina Senkina at #2, Martyna Hanusz at #4 and Erica Fredstrom at #5 to make the match close.

Liberty falls to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in the Big South play, while Charleston Southern wins its first match of the season to move to 1-7 overall and 1-1 in conference.

The Lady Flames continue their road trip with a visit to UNC Wilmington on Thursday. The non-conference contest is set for Noon.

The Liberty Lady Flames dropped only one match on their way to taking a 6-1 victory over North Carolina A&T, Friday at the Aggie Tennis Complex.

The Lady Flames swept through the doubles, winning all three matches, to claim the doubles' point.

Liberty then won five of the six singles matches to claim a 6-1 victory to snap a three-match losing streak. Four Lady Flames won their singles match in straight sets.

Liberty returns home tomorrow afternoon as they host UNC Asheville in a Big South Conference match. The match is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the E.C. Glass High School Tennis Courts.

Lady Flames Sweep Bulldogs For First Big South Match Win

March 18, 2006 · Lynchburg, Va.

The Liberty Lady Flames won each of the nine matches contested on their way to winning their first Big South Conference match, 7-0, Saturday at the E.C. Glass Tennis Courts.

The Lady Flames opened the match by taking all three doubles matches to claim the doubles point.

In singles, Liberty took all six matches to claim a 7-0 win. The Lady Flames did not drop a set in taking each match in two sets.

With back-to-back team match victories, Liberty evens its record at 5-5 overall and wins its first Big South Conference match.

The Lady Flames travel to Harrisonburg, Va., Tuesday afternoon for a non-conference match with James Madison. Match time is set for 2:30 p.m.

Lady Flames Edged by Lady Dukes

March 23, 2006 · Harrisonburg, Va.

The James Madison Dukes used the all important doubles point to edge the Liberty Lady Flames, 4-3, in a non-conference tennis match Thursday.

James Madison captured the doubles point. Lady Flames Erica Fredstrom (So., Grand Forks, S.D.) and Ekaterina Kuznetsova won the #2 doubles match, 8-5. However, James Madison squeaked out an 9-8 victory at #1 doubles and won the point with a default in the #3 doubles match to take the point.

The teams then split the singles matches as the Lady Flames actually won three matches, but with two wins and a default, the Lady Dukes were able to take the team victory.

With the setback, the Lady Flames fall to 5-6 overall on the season.

Liberty now hosts Birmingham-Southern on Tuesday at the Randolph-Macon Women’s College Tennis Courts. Match time is set for 2:30 p.m.
