Flames Open Saturday’s Action With 36-9 Victory Over Messiah

The Flames recorded a 36-9 win over host Messiah College on Saturday at Hitchcock Arena in the first of two matches for Liberty on the day.

With their second-straight victory, the Flames raise their record to 10-6 on the season and Messiah’s dual record falls to 3-9 on the year. In the match-up with the homestanding Falcons, the Flames picked up four of their eight wins by fall and one by major decision.

Liberty opened the match with two of its four pins as Sean Katz pinned Mark Eilertsen at 125 pounds (1:58) and Sam Walters pinned Alex DeHart (5:45) at 133 pounds.

Tim Harner kept things going for the Flames with a 9-2 decision win over Matt Gorkos at 141 pounds, followed by Aaron Kelley’s 7-0 blanking of Kevin Gin at 149 pounds.

Craig Gin got the Falcons on the board with a narrow 5-4 decision victory over Shaun Smith at 157 pounds, but Chad Porter gave the Flames four points right back with a 10-2 major decision over Derek Ricker at 165 pounds.

Anthony Dill tried to keep homestanding Messiah in the match with a win by fall over Jonathan Campbell (1:00) at 174 pounds; however, Liberty closed out the match with two more wins by fall and a decision to seal the victory.

Chris Daggett started the run for the Flames with a win by fall over Craig Hogan (3:56) at 184 pounds, followed by Rory Bosek’s pin over Kees Slot (6:28) at 197 pounds.

Heavyweight Josh Pelletier closed out the match with a 9-5 decision over Ethan Bucarey to end the match and give the Flames’ their 10th dual victory of the year.

The Flames round out action later on this afternoon as Liberty closes out the tri-match against Wilkes University, who currently ranks 12th in the latest NCAA Division III poll.

The Flames won their third-straight match with a 32-12 victory over Wilkes University, who currently ranks 12th in the latest NCAA Division III polls, in the second of two matches hosted by Messiah College on Saturday.

With the victory, the Flames raise their record to 11-6 on the year and the loss drops Wilkes to 8-6 on the season.

Starting with the 165 pound weight class, Chad Porter gave the Flames an early lead with a 13-4 major decision victory over Andrew Rock. Wilkes answered back at 174 pounds as Justin Barowski defeated Joseph Son by fall (3:26) to take a 6-4 lead.

Liberty answered back at 184 pounds as Chris Daggett pinned D.J. Giancola (4:42), allowing the Flames to regain control of the match, 10-6. Colin Nagy pulled Wilkes within one point, 10-9, with an 11-4 decision victory over Josh Moore, a new addition to the Flames’ roster at 197 pounds.

However, Liberty won five out of the final six weight classes to secure their 10th dual victory of the year. Patrick Walker started the run for the Flames with a major decision victory over Keith Altiery, 14-1, at the heavyweight.

At 125 pounds, Christian Smith followed with a win by fall over Shaun Farnham (1:37) to push Liberty’s lead to 20-9. Sam Walters kept things going for the Flames with a 2-1 sudden victory decision over Josh Pauling at 133 pounds.

Tim Harner picked up Liberty’s third pin of the match as he defeated Peter George by fall (4:46) at 141 pounds. Erick Smith ended the Flames’ run of victories as he scored a 7-4 decision win over Aaron Kelley at 149 pounds, before Shaun Smith gave the Flames their final three points of the match with a 5-4 decision win over Andrew Franko at 157 pounds.

The Flames return to action on Jan. 30 when they host Kings College in the Schilling Center. The dual meet is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
