Three Flames Wrestlers Garner Regional Rankings

Patrick Walker (pictured), Tim Harner and Christian Smith are ranked in the latest WrestlingReport.com Atlantic Regional poll.

February 9, 2007
Lynchburg, Va.

Tim Harner, Christian Smith and Patrick Walker, three of Liberty’s top wrestlers this season, have cracked the most recent WrestlingReport.com Atlantic Regional rankings, as announced by the wrestling web site on Feb. 3.

Harner (So., 5-11, Norristown, Pa.) ranks 14th in the 141-pound weight class regional rankings. He leads the Flames with a 34-9 record and has won 10-straight matches and 14 out of his last 15 outings.

Harner has twice been named an event’s Outstanding Wrestler, as he garnered the honor at the East Regional Duals and at the Virginia State Intercollegiates, where he was the 141-pound champion.

Smith (Jr., 5-7, Suffolk, Va.) also ranks 14th in his weight class, 125 pounds, in the latest rankings. Smith currently stands with a 23-9 mark on the season as the Virginia Tech transfer joined the official roster after the conclusion of the fall semester.
Smith has won two tournaments this year, as he was the champion at the East Stroudsburg Open and the Virginia State Intercollegiates.

Walker (Fr., 6-3, Newark, Del.) is tied for 20th in the regional rankings at heavyweight. The ranking comes thanks in part to a 26-5 record and a 17-1 mark in dual match-ups. Walker, who leads the squad in individual winning percentage at 83.9 percent, has posted victories in his last eight match-ups and 11 out of his last 13 times to the mat.

The trio of grapplers has helped the Flames post a 15-7 dual team record in their first season back on the mats, as Liberty is fielding its first wrestling team since 1994.
The Flames will close out their 2006-07 home schedule on Thursday when they host in-state opponent VMI at the Vines Center. The match starts at 7 p.m., and the Flames will be putting an undefeated, 4-0 record at home on the line.
