Lets hear it for the LU Golf Team!
LU Just won their opening tournament
Code: Select all
for 2021 in Jacksonville, Florida. Flames finished -21 under and outpaced some big programs: Oklahoma State, Florida, Florida State, Virginia and a bunch of Florida programs (11 in all).
Why our golf team is big for LU sports and the school? It brings a different set of eyes on LU. College golf attracts the more "intellectual crowd" and that is an area the media is constantly trying to throw shade at.

It is awesome to see nearly every LU program climbing to the highest levels of competition!

Great team! Year after year, they always play from behind by not scoring well in first round. If they could figure out how to get off to a good start in the first round they would be competing for national championships.

We are in 2nd place out of 12 teams on the back 9 of the final round of the Sea Best Invitational. Trailing ASUN rival N Florida, who are basically playing on their home course.

Ended up tied for 2nd with Duke. What is really exciting is that our 5th player, playing as an individual scored low enough so that if we could have swapped out his score with our 4th place guy we would have won the tournament. Great depth that will help in ncaa tournament.

Edit: If LU gets out of regionals into national finals the 5th player's score counts when narrowing down field to 15 teams and finally to 8 teams. Used to be only 4 scores counted. LU has the depth to make a run...

Maybe so, but I'm afraid I need to fact check you. Our 5th player, who competed unattached, was Zach Barbin. Zach finished at +13, which was in fact our 5th best score by a stroke. Swapping would not have changed anything. N Florida won by 12 strokes.

LU is continuing to something this year they have lacked in the past. That is the ability to play well in the first round of tournament. LU leading a deep field early in first round at 8 under par.

We end up 5th in Gainesville, 9 strokes behind the Gators, playing on their home course. All 4 teams ahead of us were SEC. Perhaps more important was that we beat ASUN rivals N Florida by 11 strokes and J'ville by 19.

Guys keep hanging with the nation's elite tournament after tournament.

Only weakness in this tournament is play of Simmoms in 5th slot. With his 14 over par, he is virtuality eliminated from having his score used if someone else falters. The 5th player from the other contenders are still competitive and are able to pick up the slack if another player in their rotation has a bad round. No safety net available for us.

We end up second, just 2 strokes back of Home course FSU, who almost choked away a big lead down the stretch. Finished 4 strokes ahead of #1 ranked Oklahoma! All this was made possible primarily by an amazing tournament from Alexandre Fuchs who was -14, to win individual honors by 6 strokes. The rest of the squad was a combined -1.

It’s a 3 day/round event. They tee it up again tomorrow. Regardless, this is a huge showing for the dimpled Flames!

I've made that same mistake before. The box scores are somewhat misleading IMHO. The only indication there is a 3rd round is the dates.

I'm going to look at the glass as half full and say that means we can still win it!

Finishing ahead of Oklahoma would be a nice boost for our ranking. Hopefully we can finish strong.

And that was with him recording a 9 on a par 5 in the last round!

Talk about balance. Our 5th best scorer on the tournament finished in a tie for 12th overall.

Great to see Ervin Chang, who has not had a great season after being a bullwork of the program for years, finish strong, tying for best score in the field in the final round.

Great to see us competing at such an elite level! Won the 'chip going away, without a dominate individual performance. That is not typical in these individual / team tournaments. Depth is what wins National titles in golf, since it comes down to individual match play. If we can get past regionals, this team has a decent chance to make it into individual play.
