Great win. The Tarholes usually have a very solid team.

No kidding, when I first read this, I was puzzled as to why you were describing our win as this.

It would be an delicious and healthy post-game meal!
Fantastic win for the guys.

What I should've done was read my post before submitting it. Why would autocorrect believe milestone and mindstone are the same is beyond me  . By the way, I wonder if that is homemade soup and not from a package/can? :D

If you can buy soup like that in a package or can, I want to know where! Actually, it's not all that hard to make from scratch, and a great way to use up veggies that are about to go bad.

Very nice result. The combination of the setup and the touch leading to the goal was superb. The most impressive aspect may have been how clean they kept #1. Will see if they can be the first side to keep MD off the board on Monday.

I realize it will never get the attention while football and basketball are running as well as they have been. But this three game stretch by men's soccer is about as good of a stretch as the program has ever had. That was a very good win tonight.

They are winning the close ones. And hanging on to leads. Completely different locker room I’d imagine. The big test will be coming back from a goal or 2 down. But so far so good and I’m super happy

To me, soccer is unwatchable. However, I am very glad that the Flames are doing so well. Beating the TarHoles, who have won a couple of NC's, was a big deal.

Just looked at the soccer schedule and all I can say is :dontgetit .

Home and home ASUN games against Bellarmine and Lipscomb.
That's it for conference play.
Can this be right?
Did the rest of the conference opt out?

After checking the ASUN website I see that apparently they have divided the conference into 2 divisions, with Liberty, Bellarmine and Lipscomb in one, the 4 FL schools in the other, and no inter-divisional games. All schools will play home and home against the teams in their division, which means the "South" division teams will play 6 games while the "North" play just 4. Apparently N Bama and KSU do not play soccer.

Yeah. Weird year all the way around.

With intentionally-reduced ASUN schedule, LU scheduled a bunch of OoC games - all close to home in VA/NC.

A win would have been nice. But a very young team with a lot of positives to take into the Fall. The first goal seemed to be a mistake made by a young team. Lipscomb second goal was solid. LU had their chances. Just couldn’t put the biscuit in the basket.
Not the results tonight you wanted but on the whole I’d say trending in the right direction

Next year they are only going to schedule nationally ranked teams. They will finish undefeated

Hard to complain with a losing record in conference play and a first round exit in conference tourney.

Yeah. Lots of ties Great for building the program at this stage but not attractive to the selection committee

As I referenced in the Marshall thread, the Thundering Herd went from an unseeded automatic qualifier from the CUSA to national champion based almost exclusively on international players. I know that Coach Bell used to lean heavily on internationals back in the day with some success.

So the question becomes should we be basing our recruiting more on domestic or internation infusions of talent?

We currently have a roster of 26 players with 8 internationals. That includes two Canadians and individual players from Germany, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Costa Rica and New Zealand. We have an American head coach and assistants from USA & Brazil.

Sly, are you suggesting that LU recruit "an International Super Squad" of "Hired Semi-pro Euro thugs" like Marshall did? It worked for them! :fineprint :woohoo

It is a thought. I do suspect the NCAA will be giving very intense scrutiny to Marshall in light of the unique makeup of that squad and the fact that it rattled the cages of the powers that be.

There are more than just talent reasons that you recruit internationals... $$$ being the biggest. Most internationals actually have a leg up on their American counterparts as a result of that, and not actually because of a talent gap. With that said, there is at least one significant reason to be cautious with going all in on international kids. Often, you don't really have the opportunity to know them as individuals anywhere near the way you can your domestic players. Likewise, they really don't know you. Many internationals have never set foot on the campus they are recruited into until they arrive for school. There will always be a significant presence of internationals on many college rosters as long as the sport is not fully funded and the fact that it's the world's game. It's very difficult for a coach not to take advantage of recruiting globally when it helps make their $$$ stretch further.

Marshall's coach got a nice raise today: from $122,000 to $375,000. That's what happens when you win national championships.
