Liberty Rally Trips Up Highlanders
RADFORD, Va. – Radford volleyball won the first two games, but Liberty rallied to defeat the Highlanders 3-2 (27-30, 26-30, 30-28, 30-23, 15-13) Saturday afternoon at the Dedmon Center. It was the final conference match for both team. The Highlanders, who fall to 4-10 in conference and 8-18 overall, finish tied for sixth in the Big South race with Coastal Carolina. The Chanticleers hold the tiebreaker in power ratings, giving them the sixth seed and RU the seventh seed for the 2006 Big South Volleyball Championship, which begins Tuesday. Radford will open the tournament against second-seeded UNC Asheville. The Lady Flames finish in third at 9-5 and will play CCU in the first round. Liberty finishes the regular season at 11-17. Radford placed three players in double digit kills, including freshman Lexi Miller (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) who had a career-high 21 kills. Her classmate Lauren Clary (Roanoke, Va.) posted a double-double with 17 kills and 18 digs and sophomore Lindsey Poole (Blountville, Tenn.) who netted 16 kills. Junior Josie Hanners (Richmond, Va.) had 58 assists. Sophomore Lindsay Rupert (Staunton, Va.) had three aces and 20 digs. In addition to Clary and Rupert, two other players scored double-digit digs. Hanners had 16 and senior Rachel Newton led all players with 30 digs. Senior Lindsey Wheeler (Houston, Texas) and sophomore Melinda Clelland (Richmond, Va.) each had seven blocks to lead the Radford defense. RU won game one and game two and seemed to be in early control of the match, but Liberty fought back, winning a close game three. The Flames completed the comeback with a 7-point win in game four. Radford took a 5-1 lead in game five, but LU fought back, tied it at 10 and won five of the final eight points to claim the match. Junior Mary Alice Pike (Durham, N.C.) and freshman Kallie Corbin (Beaverton, Ore.) each had 14 kills and senior Autum Black (Mingoville, Pa.) and sophomore Alysson Sanders (Bear, Del.) each had 10 kills for the Lady Flames. Corbin also had 45 assists and 20 digs to complete the triple-double. Junior Lara Bartolomeo (Huntington Beach, Calif.) had 28 digs for LU and Sanders had 21. Sophomore Kendall Nichols (Hoover, Ala.) and Pike had 11 and 10 digs respectively. Black led the Lady Flames in blocks with six. RU will have its senior night Monday, hosting non-conference opponent ETSU at 7:00 pm. Liberty will next play their Big South match Tuesday, hosting Coastal Carolina.
