Recently, Liberty's own mascot, Sparky, took home co-national championship honors following his first-ever performance at the UCA College National Mascot Competition.
On Jan. 15, Sparky performed for the first time in school history at the UCA College National Mascot Competition. Liberty's mascot team has been attending the UCA College Cheerleading/Mascot Camp in Scranton, Pa., for several years. Last year, the team submitted an entry video for the national competition, finishing one spot outside of qualifying for the national championship competition.
This year, Sparky's entry video qualified in second place, just one point shy of overtaking YoUDee, the mascot from Delaware, who is the long-time champion and leader of the Open Mascot Division.
At the mascot national competition, each university's mascot performs a one minute skit which follows an original theme and incorporates props, voice-overs and music tracks. For Sparky's national championship debut, the mascot team picked a theme pertaining to Liberty's nickname – The Flames.
During his skit, Sparky begins his regular Saturday morning day but cannot seem to avoid fire and finds himself in some trouble at several points. The skit required the intricate design of certain props and included key moments of crowd interaction. The skit also included elements of humor, such as a spinoff of Steve Harvey's recent mishap while hosting the Miss University pageant.
Sparky's performance allowed him to share co-national championship honors with Delaware's YoUDee. The pair finished ahead of Will D. Cat (Villanova) and Blaze (UAB), who took home second and third place honors, respectively.
"I'm extremely proud of the mascot team for their national championship effort," said Jordan Ballard, Liberty's Head Cheerleading Coach who oversees the mascot program.
The Liberty University Mascot Team is a 10-member team who is responsible for Sparky's involvement in more than 200 campus and community events throughout the school year. Six of the team members spent numerous hours during Christmas Break working on their nationals' routine. Zach Bolton, Liberty's head mascot coordinator, stated that the team sought to live up to the Liberty standard that "If it's Christian, it should be better" - a standard that the team will continue to set for the future.
Big shout out to the current mascot team on accomplishing a huge feat. When I was a part of the program, we always dreamed of competing at the national stage. Really happy to see that Zach has elevated Sparky into a National Champion!
