Release: 09/25/2006

Lynchburg, V.A. – Senior goalkeeper Tyler Kettering made history on Monday afternoon becoming Gardner-Webb Men’s Soccer’s All-Time Career Saves Leader.

Kettering, who has been a constant in the net for the last four years at GWU, become the new leader at the 7:13 mark of the match, when he stopped his 363 career save, passing Brooks Derrick, who had 362 saves and had held the record since 1996.

As for the contest, the Bulldogs struck first, as freshman George Tasedan scored his first goal as a Bulldog in the 31st minute, when Richard Godfrey found an open Tasedan in the middle of the box with a through pass, setting up Tasedan who knotched the goal and gave the Bulldogs an early 1-0 lead.

The ‘Dogs lead would not last long, as at the 41:26 mark, less than 11 minutes later, the Flames Marko Parenta evened up the score at 1-1, when he picked up a loose ball on the right side of the box and put a shot over GWU’s keeper Tyler Kettering’s head.

With the Flames on the board and the score knotted at 1-1, Liberty continued to pressure the GWU defense for the remainder of the half, as Kettering made stop after stop, keeping the score at 1-1 going into the half.

The second period proved to be very different than the first, as it became much more physical, as 27 of the 41 fouls called for the match were called in the last 45 minutes.

The Flames came out of the halftime firing, as they outshot the Bulldogs 11-2 in the second half.

Liberty’s game winning goal came at the 66:13 mark, when Joshua Boateng put a penalty kick past Kettering in the top right corner to put the Flames up, 2-1.

The Bulldogs best attempt to tie the score up again came in the 75th minute when Miguel Pinzon launched a shot through the defense but was denied by the Flame’s keeper Kevin Mahan, helping to perserve the win for Liberty.

GWU keeper Kettering had a season high 14 saves for the match, including nine saves in the second half.

The Bulldogs (0-5-2) will not have much time to rest, as they will return to action on the road on Thursday, September 28, when they will travel to Macon, Ga. to open up Atlantic Sun Conference play against the Mercer Bears. The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

From libertyflames.com it works fine if you are on campus
After Darryl Roberts was pulled down inside the box in the game’s 67th minute, Joshua Boateng scored on the ensuing penalty kick for a 2-1 Liberty win over the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs, Monday afternoon at Liberty Soccer Field.

With the non-conference win, Liberty moves to 4-3 on the season, while Gardner-Webb falls to 0-5-2.

The contest opened with both teams trading shots early. The Bulldogs would break through for a 1-0 advantage in the 31st minute. Richard Godfrey found George Tasedan open in the middle of the box with a through pass and the forward put it home.

The Bulldogs’ advantage was short-lived as less than 11 minutes later Marko Parenta (Sr., F, Zadar, Croatia), who had just entered the match on a substitution in the 39th minute, corralled a loose ball near the box on the left side and lofted a shot over the head of Bulldog goalkeeper Tyler Kettering, knotting the match at 1-1. It was the senior’s first of the season.

Keeping the pressure on, midfielder Boateng (So., Accra, Ghana) would force Kettering to make one of many saves on the afternoon in the closing minutes of the half, sending the match to intermission at 1-1.

After the intermission, the Flames continued to press the Bulldog defense, out-shooting Gardner-Webb, 4-1, in the first 20 minutes of the second stanza.

In the match’s 67th minute, Liberty’s Roberts (R-Sr., F, Trincity, Trinidad) split two defenders near the left side post and was brought down for a penalty kick. Boateng followed by beating Kettering to the top right corner to put the Flames up, 2-1. It was the midfielder’s first goal as a Flame.

Afterwards, Liberty had opportunities to extend its lead, but Kettering came up big on several occasions to keep Gardner-Webb in range.

However, the Flames’ defense also stiffened, allowing the Bulldogs only one shot over the remaining 23 minutes. Goalkeeper Kevin Mahan (Sr., Waterford, Mich.) made an outstanding save on the lone shot, a blast by Miguel Pinzon through traffic in the 75th minute.
On the afternoon, Liberty out shot Gardner-Webb, 19-8, and also had the advantage in corner kicks at 10-2. In a physical contest, the two teams combined for 41 fouls.

Seniors Adrian Bumbut (MF, Zalau, Romania) and Roberts led the Flames with five shot each in the contest, while Tasedan had three for the Bulldogs.
The Flames’ keeper Mahan made one save, while Kettering made 14 saves, nine in the second half, for the Bulldogs.

Liberty steps back into Big South Conference play this weekend as the Flames take their longest trip of the season to Birmingham, Ala. to square off with the Birmingham-Southern Panthers. Match time on Saturday is scheduled for 2 p.m.

They'll still be in the A-Sun next year...they won't be in the league until the 08-09 seasons. Unlike Elon, they had enough respect to give their league 2 years notice.

Don't worry, I'm not going to bring it up...

And I shouldn't be too mad at Elon, they did have to pay a hefty fee to leave early...
