Ok people, I am going to solve this whole "Flame" issue once and for all.

If it is America's youth we are concerned with, and our use of "flames," let us use their language.

The Urban Dictionary definition for "flame" -

1. To insult someone electronically, or otherwise. Sometimes to be a group insult.
2. To insult a person you are arguing with over the internet in hopes of reviving your argument.
3. A flame is noun associated with the action of flaming, what people do when they express a strongly held opinion without holding back any emotion. Although flames often get out of hand, they have a purpose in the ecology of cyberspace. Many flames are aimed at teaching someone something (usually in overstated language) or stopping them from doing something (like offending other people). Flame messages often use more brute force than is strictly necessary, but that's half the fun.

Any gamers here remember this from their gaming days and the "flame wars" that came along with WoW and so forth.

Now let us check the definition of "flamer"

1. Extremely flamboyant homosexual. Very bright clothing, loud speach, upbeat attitude, often noisy or annoying, intrusive. Very very gay...
2. An outgoing homosexual, who is very open with his gayity.
3. A person who constantly starts fights on forums or message boards. Usually with many vilgar statements, and outright lies.

People, we are the flames, not the flamers, thus the discussion of any LGBTA references shall cease to exist on this message board for all time!! Middle school teachers should educate their ignorant students. People who want to change the name for the gay reference reason should relax. Our job now is simply to educate the masses....a Flame is not a Flamer, it never was, and never will be. Anyone who thinks otherwise is simply...wrong!

Oh the irony - To flame, IE...a verbal tirade on the internet meant to insult someone, is our nickname. Seems fitting!!?!??!!

Wow. You seem to have you panties in a bunch today. I'm glad you pointed out the information from the Urban Dictionary. I will be sure to point that out next time a student (or any other person I come across) confuses "Flames" with "Flamers". Once I quote the Urban Dictionary and educate them, they will certainly change their minds about our mascot and think it is actually swag. (My guess is that you will have to look that one up too.)

Sheesh.

Yet I am not the one who wants to change the name because I can't handle a little heat from some 8th graders. Makes perfect sense. Let us revisit your previous posts, in which you whine about not being able to wear your Flames gear anywhere near school for fear of the 8th grade hoards, and secretly wishing to change the name as a result. That my friend, is weak! Who runs your classroom, your students, or you?

Reading comprehension is an important tool we teach at my school. If you will go back and read the post, I made it clear that it wasn't just the kids that joke about the name, but the staff as well. Let me guess, I should scream "URBAN DICTIONARY!!!!" at the adults who joke about it as well, right?

For the record, I checked your source for the definition of your handle. I think it fits.

You could politely belittle them (the kids and adults) with your extreme knowledge of street slang brought to you by your good pal, logic.

How hard is it to say -

"You do know that flame(s) is A LOT different than flamer, right? Surely you are aware of the difference in American pop culture today?"

Yeah. That will work.

While I don't know if citing the "Urban Dictionary" or any dictionary at all would help to confront someone who tries to use "Flames" as a pejorative.

At the end of the day, if someone wants to make fun of you, they will. They will find a way to make fun of you or the school you go to.

Almost any team name can be turned around into something silly if someone wants to.

Off the top of my head, I can think of several teams that could be turned on their head to be insults.

Baseball

Giants - This could be used to make fun of people with Gigantism. which you can read more about here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gigantism.

Angels - People sometimes may call them "angles" and refer to them being quite "obtuse"

White Sox - Basically you are a piece of laundry.

Red Sox - Bloody laundry. Basically means they likely murdered someone or work in a morgue or something. Not cool.

Orioles, Blue Jays, Cardinals - Oh, you're a bird. Hmmm, unless your Hitchcock color me not scared.

Mets - Do they like opera?

Phillies - A sandwich.

Astros - The dog from Jetsons? Basically the Scooby Doo of the future.

Dodgers - A bunch of hippies that burnt their draft card.

Yankees - No comment.

Anyways, as you can see, baseball alone, names sometimes are silly.

I think Flames is a cool name so I don't mind it. If someone calls me a "Flamer" I would just go up to them, and gently hold their hand, and watch how uncomfortable they get. Or, more likely, I would just ignore them, which I think, in the end does the trick.

Go Flames!

Hmmm, maybe it's why the Fantastic Four movies were always flops..."Flame on!" can have a different connotation.

At the end of the day, I honestly never made that connection until I saw it on this board and as I said, at least with any team I have ever supported, your opponents will find a way to dig at you any way they can. Let them. Show them up on the field, court, etc.

And my point is simply that those who try to confuse flames with a flamer are simply wrong, and they should be made known of their ignorance every at every possible opportunity.

Wasn't directing my comments at you. People will make fun regardless. To think you can 'educate' them is ridiculous. I'm not sure how Flame really applies to a Baptist School, a Pentacostal one maybe, but it is what it is.\

How does that Mark Twain quote go...ahh yes...

“Do not argue with an idiot they drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.”

I would much rather be Flames than eagles, crusaders, thunder, bears, etc.

"Liberty Eagles" ....ugh. Boring! Now Philadelphia Eagles and 76'ers...that makes sense. "Knowledge Aflame" .... Liberty Flames. Sounds good to me.

As a former Crusader I take umbrage! :D Not sure who edited my post above either.
Knowledge and Athletics don't necessarily go hand in hand either :P
