Anyone notice the new logo on libertyflames.com? Its an LU w/ the fiery eagle head protruding from the L over the U.
Is Liberty Athletics Rebranding (again)?

http://www.libertyflames.com now features a starkly different Liberty logo dropping the "Liberty Flames" and replacing it with an LU that utilizes a very different font from other "LU" reference fonts. The eagle also appears to have changed. It feels like it's moving dramatically away from the institutional branding - which is very unfortunate. With the recent ad campaigns for Liberty & Liberty Online it's too bad to see us give up the growing brand recognition and utilize a logo / font set that is unrecognizable to those who would view the primary Liberty or Online Ads. I admittedly prefer the "Liberty" moniker to "LU" in branding but at a minimum they need to be tied together thoughtfully so that when you see a Liberty ad or commercial you can visually connect it with our athletics and visa versa.

I'm all for using LU. It wasn't but a year or so ago when the directive was to NOT use LU. I can agree that I'm not a big fan of the look of the logo, but far be it from me to not give them the benefit of the doubt.

That logo would look awesome on a football helmet. The one we use now is hard to make out.

Oh my goodness I do not like that logo. Why not use the LU font we've been using for the last 10 years or so? I'm sure they're just trying to fix all of the problems that have come up with the last one but this is not the answer. That's not even the right color blue. There's 2 different shades of blue in that logo and neither is the right color. It reminds me of another school but I can't figure out which one. Maybe a mix between Iowa and Lehigh.

I've just been staring at it. Maybe the darker blue is the correct shade. It looks identical to the colored bar at the very top of the page, which I assume is correct. But the light blue makes it look lighter. Seems like there's 2 versions. One is the obvious one with the LU, which is a completely new font. Reminds me of the awful logo ESPN had for us for years with the LU that looked like it was falling forward with the flames shooting out the back. The other is like they took the awful baseball logo, which I hate, and then made it look thicker and icey. I do not like. Plus it makes all of my clothes dated.

I like it other than the font. Get rid of the hangy-off things from the top left of the letters and I think you have something. Even with those, I like it better than what we had. Go LU!

Did Liberty commission Medic for that LU? Definitely came from MS Paint.

I was rather surprised to see the new logo myself, but seeing some of the comments on here, I guess there just isn't pleasing some people. We stick with the old logo, its unrecognizable or it doesnt look good on athletic gear. So they change the logo, and you still dont like it, and find a whole new reason for not liking it. Sorry that somebody didnt come on here and ask, "hey, we are looking to update the university athletics logo and wanted to run it by y'all first and make sure it was ok."

What's wrong with that BJ? Several Universities have done something similar. Most have a big 'unveiling' type event as well. Also, just because you change something that you don't like doesn't mean what you change it to is any better. If I don't like a hamburger because its under cooked, bringing it back over cooked isn't going to make me like it any better.

At least we didn't go back to this one -
Although nothing beats this -
I wonder why the change? Also BJ....most corporations do an incredible amount of market testing to determine whether or not a logo will stick. They actually do "go on there" and ask the consumer/customer what looks best. If they survey 100,000 people and 80% don't like the logo, only a brave CEO would still implement the change.
Look no further than some of these awful early logos for some of our greatest corporations today -

i got like one of the last fitted red caps with the bird logo on it at the bookstore when we were there a few years back.
its the old school bird sailor logo. its not a zephyr or new era so it fits kind of goofy but it works.
i think they should just go back to that one. the one that resembles a tattoo one gets than completely regrets a year later grew old fast. this is a university, not a chopper shop.

the problem with the lower one in your post logic is that its often been said that it doesnt scale well on things like the football helmets (at least as has been mentioned on here). My guess is the change was made to create something more recognizable on athletic gear among other things. Course Im surprised that with all the dislike for the old logo (and for this new one) that folks havent broken out their MS Paint and Adobe Illustrator programs and tried to come up with something they think is better.

I'm all for market testing. I have to believe some of that was done and hopefully outside of a bubble. Any time things are 'new, people have to adjust. I will have to learn to like it.
I also would have been a fan of a big "unveiling" where the designers and administration came out to share where we're going and why. Even if the explanations were about how it looks on gear and television... that would have been helpful.
I also share concern about changing fonts again. It'd be nice to institutionalize a font choice.
A public unveil would have answered a lot of questions and rallied support for the new look. When it's dropped out there in this way, it leaves more questions than answers. For the moment I'm sure we're the only corner of the universe who is paying attention to the change.
Besides BJ... it's a message board. Opinions are spoken here. You have 12,600+ posts... you're aware

I'm sure PA is doing that as we speak!

I like the one we've been using for the past 10 years but it does have its drawbacks. Logos seem to work out best when they are square. Or fit inside of a square so that it takes up most of the space (like a circle). There's probably graphic design terminology for this but I'm not a graphic designer. You notice how this one would do that way easier as opposed to the long rectangular shape of the old one.
Bottom line: The best idea would have been just to use fighting sparky. Everybody likes it. I know it's just a clipart or whatever but it's been around forever, and everybody associated with LU recognizes it, it looks good small, we redisgned the sparky costume based on it, and it's solid without any negative space.

Would it be scaleable for things like football helmets and any athletic items like that?
