Flames Begin Fall Season at Mary Washington Tennis Kickoff Classic
September 9, 2006
Fredericksburg, Va.
Box Scores
Liberty doubles teams had solid performances as the Flames men’s tennis teams opened their 2006 fall schedule Friday and Saturday at the University of Mary Washington Kickoff Classic.
Returners Jarda Trojan and Sebastian Pena teamed together to win two of three Flight #1 doubles matches over the two days. Trojan and Pena opened with 9-7 victory over Mary Washington’s John James and Randy Loden on Friday, while later being edged by Bobby McNally and Matt Stillwagon of Richmond, 7-5. The pair then defeated the Longwood duo of Carlos Garcia de Andaoain and Brandon Lindsley, Saturday, 8-2.
Also having a successful weekend was the pairing of newcomers, Chad Simpson and Luis Olivera. The two dropped their first Flight #2 doubles match, Friday, to Richmond’s Doug Banker and Matt Farina, 8-5, but came back in their second match of the day to beat Longwood’s Rashko Patnikov and John Bair, 8-4. On Saturday, they picked up their second victory of the weekend, downing Evan Goff and John Pollack of Mary Washington, 8-6.
In singles, Pena, Simpson and Olivera each had won one match on the weekend.
Results for the entire weekend are available by clicking on the Box Score link at the top of this story.
The men will continue their fall tournament schedule next weekend by competing in the Old Dominion Fall Tournament in Norfolk, Va. The three-day event gets underway on Friday and runs throughout the weekend.

Hey guys
Just got back from the ODU tourney, a few tidbits:
Jorda Trojan made the finals of the B flight-lost 6-4, 6-4 but as you can tell it was a close match and he was hurting a little bit.
Jonita Randolph won the backdraw of her flight.
Chad Simpson and Luis Olivera made the finals of their doubles flight.
Ekaterina Kuznetsova did well in her flight, making the finals.
The men's team was vastly improved this weekend compared to last weekend, and the women are also improving as well under Chris.
And FYI: the matches on Tuesday against Longwood have been postponed.

Just a quick update: the women had a very successful weekend at the NC State tournament, as this was the first time in several years that anyone made it to the final day of play on Sunday...and actually the whole team played on Sunday. We had several 3 and 4 place finishes in their individual flights, and Ekaterina Kuznetsova took 2nd in hers (could have probably taken 1st, played a girl from Samford who were OVC champs last year and if it wasn't for a badly injured leg she might've won-this girl has fight in her) and Jonita Randolph finally beat a Winthrop girl. We posted several wins over girls from SoCon teams (Wofford, Western Carolina, and Appy State) as well as going undefeated against UNCA's girls with former coach Larry Hubbard. Also at this tournament were several Big South teams-we fared well against High Point, aforementioned UNCA and CSU, but CCU is definitely going to be one of the top teams in the league come spring.

It sure is sounding like my rant against the school for NOT hiring a coach until late summer and it killing recruiting is unfounded.

Well Alejandra did do some recruiting, but most of the players on the women's team are sophomores and juniors...one senior. The main problem wasn't that the players were bad, just that Hubbard (aka MORON) didn't teach them how to win, as was evident by the way we beat the girls from UNCA.

Randolph and Kuznetsova Shine at Wolfpack Invitational
October 1, 2006
Raleigh, N.C.
Lady Flames’ Jonita Randolph and Ekaterina Kuznetsova each won two of three singles matches, highlighting a strong showing by the Liberty women’s tennis team at the 2006 Residence Inn North/Wolfpack Invitational this past weekend.
18 teams participated in the three-day event, including six Big South Conference squads.
Randolph opened the tournament Friday afternoon by downing East Carolina’s Brooke Walter in three sets, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 in Flight A1 singles. On Saturday, she battled Richmond’s Beatrice Grasu through three sets, before falling 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 in the semifinals. Sunday, Randolph claimed third place for the flight by defeating Big South Conference opponent, Patricia Coimbra of Winthrop, in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
Meanwhile, Kuznetsova continued her successful fall play by finishing second in Flight B4 at the invitational. Both of her wins came over Big South Conference opponents. In her first match on Friday, the sophomore defeated Charleston Southern’s Lina Benkirane, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. Saturday, Kuznetsova moved into the Flight B4 finals with a straight set 6-4, 6-4 victory over Leslie Smith of UNC Asheville. In the finals, her run came to a halt when she fell to Samford’s Emily White, 6-2, 6-3.
In all, the Lady Flames won 11 of 21 singles matches over the three days with all seven team members, winning at least one match on the weekend.
On the doubles side, Liberty did not fare quite as well. Two of three teams recorded one win on the weekend.
Alll the results from this past weekend are available in microsoft excel by clicking here.
The Lady Flames return to action this weekend by competing at the Elon Fall Tennis Draw, Friday and Saturday.

ok- shake it off.
after least spring- we can't expect much respect- but the teams did show improvement in the fall. Lets hope being under-rated brings out the "eye of the tiger" in them
If that's possible in tennis

5-2 L to UNCW tonight by the ladies.
Yes, the teams are improving. The fitness level is the best its ever been in the history of the program. The men have already equalled their win total from last season (including a win over George Mason-a team that competes in the same conference with ranked teams like W&M, ODU and VCU). The men's team has no seniors and only one junior. The ladies have only one senior and one junior. Their are also a couple really good recruits on the women's side coming in next season. Both teams are young, but both are improving rapidly.

Men beat Virginia Intermont (#12 in NAIA) 5-4, which is a great win b/c last year they beat us 4-3 (they wanted to use a 9-point format for today's game). They lost 2 players from last year and we lost 4. The men are now 3-2, and have surpassed their win total from last season with this win.
