Men's Golf Struggles During First Two Rounds

The Flames had a rough start to the 2006-07 season as they find themselves placed sixteen out seventeen teams after two rounds at the UNC Greensboro’s Mid Pines Intercollegiate.
The Flames shot a 597 for 36 holes of competition and find themselves 37 shots off tournament leader Wichita State (560). Wisconsin (562) and Old Dominion (563) find themselves on the heels of the Shockers at two and three strokes respectively.
Neil O’Briein of Wofford is leading the pack at 12-under par after shooting with both Ryan Spears and Ty Sanders of Wichita State as his closest competition heading into the final round at 6-under par.
Raul Calvo led the Flames as he finished the second round at five over par. Rounding out the Flames top performers was Michael Turner who matched Calvo after shooting a Liberty best two under-par 70 in the second round.
The Flames will return to action tomorrow for a final 18 holes of competition at the par 72, 6,528 course.

Men's Golf Finishes 15th out of 17 in Season's First Tournament

The Flames conclude a season opening tournament as they finish 15 out of 17 teams in the 54-hole Mid Pines Intercollegiate. The tournament was hosted by UNC Greensboro in Pinehurst, N.C.
The Flames shot their second-best round of the tournament today to move up one spot from where they sat entering the day. Liberty shot nine-over par as a team to finish the day at 297 and 894 for the tournament, finishing 47 shots behind Wisconsin who past up day one leader Wichita State for the tournament win. Wisconsin entered the day two shots off leader Wichita State who had its worst round of the tournament on Tuesday as they finished the day one-over. Wisconsin shot their worst team round of the tournament, a three-under day (285) but capitalized on Wichita State’s off day. Old Dominion earned second place honors as they finish in a tie with Wichita State two shots behind Wisconsin.
Ryan Spears of Wichita State captured medalist honors as he caught Neil O’Briain of Wofford who was the leader entering the final round. O’Briain entered the day at 12-under and six shots ahead of second place Spears and fellow Shockers teammate Ty Sanders. O’Briain faltered in the third round shooting a two-over par. Spears shot a five-under par to finish first in the tournament. Christian Brand of Marshall rounded out the top three finishing nine-under par for the tournament and one shot behind O’Briain.
Jay Calvo led the Flames as he finished the tournament six-over par (222) after shooting one-over (73) during the third round. Josh Bain finished the tournament eight-over par (224) while Michael Turner (226), Parker McKoy (227) and Peter Horstman (228) round out the Flames lineup.
The Flames are back in action September 23-24th when they travel to Sunset Beach for Elon University’s Sea Trail Golf Invitational.

Liberty Finishes Sixth At Frank Landrey Invitational After Rain Cancels Third Round

Round three of Liberty’s Frank Landrey Invitational was canceled on Tuesday due to in climate weather. Western Carolina wins the tournament finishing six-strokes over Charleston Southern after shooting a 571 on Monday at the Poplar Grove Golf Club in Amherst.
Longwood posted a 588 while Towson and Radford shot a 590 rounding out the top five. In round two Liberty shot the second-best team score to place sixth at the end of the day.
Matt Cook from Western Carolina shot a 65 in the first round and a 67 in the second round to lead all players at day’s end with a 132. Cook’s teammate Andres Cuenca and Stuart Carrihill of Charleston Southern are five strokes back at 137. Carrihill shot a 64 in round one, which was the lowest score of the day.
Liberty was led by Michael Turner, who finished day one tied for 12th at 148. Josh Bain shot a team-low 72 in the second round to finish the day at 149 with Stephen Hawk. Jay Calvo and Parker McKoy shot 150 and 154, respectively, to round out the Liberty squad.
The Flames “B” team finished ninth out of 10 teams for the tournament with a 613.
Andrew Nelson is tied for 18th with a 150. Peter Horstman shot a 154 and Mark Hammond and Manuel Moreno each shot a 155. Rounding out the squad was Nathan Clarkson who shot a 157 for the day.
The Flames are back in action on Monday when they travel to Kerrville, Texas for the University of Texas at San Antonio’s Invitational.

Liberty Finishes In Ninth Place At The UTSA Invitational

Liberty University shot the fifth best team round on Tuesday to finish the UTSA Invitational in 9th place out of 11 teams at the Oak Hills Country Club in Kerrville, Texas.
Southeastern Louisiana held their two round lead over Sam Houston St. to win the Invitational as they shot 846 for the tournament. Sam Houston came into round three seven strokes behind the leader but shot a 289 on day two taking second place, nine strokes behind tournament champion Southeastern Louisiana. St. Johns (863), host Texas-San Antonio (866) and Western Kentucky (871) round out the top five teams.
There was a three way tie for medalist honors as Peter O’Keeffe of Southeastern Louisiana, Robert Gwin of Sam Houston St. and Keegan Bradley of St. John’s all finished 8-under par for the tournament. Thomas Kearney of Texas-San Antonio finished one stroke behind the leaders to place fourth.
For Liberty, Steve Hawk shot a tournament team low of 71 on Tuesday to lead the Flames to the fifth lowest team score in round three. Josh Bain finished five strokes behind Hawk for the tournament as he shot 224 for the tournament. Parker McKoy shot a 225, Jay Calvo shot a 228 and Peter Horstman shot a 229 to round out the Flames’ five.
Liberty is back in action at Old Dominion’s Seascape Collegiate at the Seascape Golf Course in Kitty Hawk, N.C. The tournament is a two day, 54-hole event October 30-31.

Tournament Team Results And Top Golfers
Liberty University climbed up three spots to finish Old Dominion’s Seascape Collegiate in 11th place at the par-70, 6,131-yard Seascape Golf Club in Kitty Hawk, N.C. on Tuesday.
Campbell came from third place to capture the tournament after shooting a team round best 279. East Carolina finished in second place four shots off the lead while day one leader Winthrop (567) shot a 294 on Tuesday to fall to third place. Host Old Dominion (569) and Radford (577) finished fourth and fifth respectively to round out the top five.
Kyle Spahr of Campbell won medalist honors as he finished at six-under for the tournament (134). Spahr came into the day tied for fourth place and two strokes off the lead. Anthony Reale of East Carolina and Eric Onesi of Old Dominion each shared the lead after day one, fell to second place as each shot five-under par (135).
For Liberty, Jay Calvo led the way tying for ninth in the tournament as he finished one-over par (141). Michael Turner (144) finished at four-over par while Josh Bain (149) finished at nine-over par. Rounding out the Liberty five were Stephen Hawk (157) and Parker McKoy (159) who finished 17-over par and 19-over par respectively.
This tournament concludes the Flames fall schedule. Liberty Men’s Golf is back in action March 5-6, 2007 at the Lonnie D. Small Invitational hosted by Campbell University in Bires Creek, N.C.

Incidently we won this event last year- so thats a bit of a dropoff
the silver lining: kudos to frosh Andrew Nelson finishing 14th out of 111 in his first start.
