Look down the list of the top 50 teams in the final fall Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings and, for the most part, you will find your usual suspects. There are the likes of UCLA, Oklahoma State, Florida, Alabama, Georgia Tech, Stanford, Texas A&M, Augusta State, Georgia, Washington, etc.

Then there’s one that may cause you to stop and maybe even scratch your head a little bit. In at No. 41 sits Liberty University, the small, Christian-based school out of Lynchburg, Va.

Your first question might be, “Who are these guys?”

are we really still considered small?? I mean I understand we are by and large unknown...but I don't think even just considering the campus population that we can be considered a small school. Over 10,000 isn't exactly small...

but good for our golf team, just another way for people to find out a little bit about our school

In the sports world, we are small.

There are the likes of UCLA, Oklahoma State, Florida, Alabama, Georgia Tech, Stanford, Texas A&M

And small compared to these schools (unless you factor in our DLP enrollment).

I just noticed in that article they mentioned Augusta State. I know its off-topic, but wasn't Augusta State a founding member of the Big South before stepping down to D-II? I'm guessing they left their golf program at D-I.

Great write-up though, good publicity is good publicity, even in a small (except in the golf niche) publication.

I am guessing they have a nice recruiting tool that some guy named Bobby laid out back in the day.

Houston Baptist used to be a golf powerhouse once upon a time as well. They count Colin Montgomerie among their more famous alumni.

Augusta State's story is pretty cool. Golf is their only D-I sport. When you can go and play on the worlds greatest golf course down the street on a regular basis its pretty easy to recruit for that sport.

A golf course would definitely give alumni and donors something else to do while in Lynchburg on visits. If it was done right it could be something special for the school to showcase.
