Blayne Barber took the suspense out of who would be the medalist Tuesday at a U.S. Amateur qualifier at the Sawgrass Country Club when he birdied his first three holes and went on to win by three shots.

The real drama occurred for the third and final qualifying spot for the Amateur next month at Chambers Bay, Wash.

Max McKay, a Bartram Trail graduate and a member of the Liberty University golf team, thought he was out of the running for his second U.S. Amateur after a triple-bogey 7 at the par-4 16th hole.
