Chelanga 2010 NCAA Outdoors Thread

“I’ve heard it’s amazing,” Chelanga said. “I’ve never been to Oregon, so I’m excited. Tell the people in Track Town to be excited, because we’re coming out there to put on a good show.”

As the 2009-2010 school year began, it finally looked as if Chelanga could achieve the fame which he had waited for and deserved. Entering last November's NCAA Cross Country Championships, Chelanga was the top returner, but many were talking of how Stanford's Chris Derrick or Northern Arizona's David McNeill would pose a large threat to him. Then again, he had lost at the Pre-Nationals cross country meet earlier in the season. However, Chelanga put any talk of an upset to rest as soon as the gun fired, taking the lead and never looking back, ultimately beating the rest of the field by a whopping 25 seconds while setting a course record of 28:41.3.

Sam wins the 10,000 by 18 seconds! He was completely cruising and had zero competition. What a race!

First outdoor track champion from Liberty!

Fantastic! I had forgotten he was running tonight. Is Josh Cox working the webcast/telecast this year?

The feed is coming directly from the PA guy at Heward Field. Josh does a great job, but there is something nice about just listening to what the people in the stands hear during a meet.

By the way, Sam will be going for the 10,000/5,000 double on Saturday afternoon. I'll have to check the time, but the race is going to be carried live on CBS. I'm pretty sure it is right before the USA/England match begins.

The 5000 is on CBS now. Sam in 5th place midway through. Not a very fast pace, which doesn't play in his favor.

Sam finishes second to McNeil. Same guy who beat him in the 5000 indoors.

Gah. The pace was just too slow early on. I'm sure Sam didn't want to be the one dragging everyone around the track for the first couple of miles, but he really had no chance against the mullet-laden Ausie in a kickers race. Cudos to Sam for going all out in an attempt to double back. That's a tough thing to do!

In any case, we have another national championship in the books for LU after this weekend!

Sam's heroics helped LU to a 13th place finish in Division I. Wow!
