Beenhakker to take 10 'locals' to Miami camp
American to be part of mix

National Team head coach head coach Leo Beenhakker will carry ten home-based players to Fort Lauderdale, Miami to join another six players based in the United States for a five-day training camp as the "Soca Warriors" look ahead to their February 28 friendly international against Iceland.

The camp will be run at the Sunrise Hilton and training centre which has been a venue used on occasions before by the national team from February 1-6.

Beenhakker held sessions with the home-based players last Saturday and has decided to include midfielder Aurtis Whitley, fresh from a trial with English Premier League club Portsmouth, new CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh signing Anthony Wolfe, Atiba Charles of W Connection and teammate goalkeeper Jan Michael Williams, Jabloteh midfielder Kerry Baptiste as well as Errol McFarlane, Anthony Rougier, Nigel Henry, ex-Japanese-based player Silvio Spann and defender Cyd Gray for the training camp.

Gray is coming off a trial at English club Luton Town. Both Gray and Whitley reportedly held their own during the trials and will await further word from the respective clubs through their agents.

The main purpose of the overseas camp is also for Beenhakker to have a further look at some of the promising US-based players who were involved in a training camp here last month under the eyes of assistant coach Anton Corneal.

They are George Mason University defender Anthony Noreiga who was on MLS trials last week, the former St Anthony's College duo of Julius James (University of Connecticut) and Kevon Neaves (University of South Florida), as well as the Liberty University duo, Osei Telesford and Darryl Roberts and former US National Youth player Quevas Kirk.

Kirk's father is Trinidadian and he has made 34 starts for the United States national under-17 team, with 15 international starts.

He was the team's topscorer in 2004 with eleven goals. The 17-year-old striker was drafted by MLS side LA Galaxy in the 2005 MLS Superdraft.

He was attached to the Chicago Magic club before moving to the Galaxy.

Current MLS players Cornell Glen (Colorado Rapids), Avery John (New England Revolution) and Scott Sealy (Kansas City Wizards) were not considered for this camp as they are all reporting back to their clubs for preseason training.

Brent Rahim, who was part of Saturday's sessions with the other US-based pros, is also heading off to Dallas FC from February 4.

"We don't have to forget that there are several local players who were part of the team who can possibly make the team that goes to the World Cup," Beenhakker said yesterday.

"We will give our attention to these players. Based on the job that Anton did with the Under 23 and Under 21 players, we can have some interested players from the United States and we will also give them the full attention."

Beenhakker will be accompanied by assistant coaches Wim Rijsbergen and Corneal, team sports physio Zeph Nicholas, goalkeeper coach Michael Maurice and equipment manager Ikin Williams on his technical staff, while Bruce Aanensen (Manager) and George Joseph (Assistant manager) will also make the trip.

a little late but they covered it! Camp starts tomorrow

Flames Roberts and Telesford Invited To Participate In Trinidad and Tobago World Cup Training Camp
January 31, 2006 · Lynchburg, Va.

Liberty soccer players Darryl Roberts and Osei Telesford have been invited by the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation to participate in their National Senior Team’s training camp in preparation for the FIFA World Cup later this year.

The two Flames seniors will attend the five-day camp in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The camp begins tomorrow and concludes next Monday.
Our program is honored that the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation has invited Darryl and Osei into camp as they prepare their roster for the FIFA World Cup,” stated Liberty head coach Jeff Alder. “These two players have committed to improving daily and have displayed the ability to play at a high level.

“I'm ecstatic for both Darryl and Osei and their families. It is also a proud day for Liberty University to have these two guys representing us at the Senior National Team level.”

Recently, the pair announced their return to Liberty for their final season in 2006.

Telesford, a native of San Juan, Trinidad, comes off a junior season in which saw him named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-South Atlantic Region First Team. In addition, he was named to his third consecutive Big South All-Conference team. After being named all-conference at defender the previous two seasons, he moved to midfield this season where he finished eighth in the conference and second on the Flames in goals with six, while being named to the conference’s first team. He also dished out five assists and finished second on the team with 17 points. In addition, he was named to the 2005 Big South All-Tournament team.

Roberts, a native of Trincity, Trinidad, was named to the Trinidad and Tobago National Team in the summer of 2003, becoming the first Liberty student-athlete to ever be named to a full national team. He entered his senior season with the Flames just seven points shy of becoming the program’s all-time leading scorer, but a broken collarbone suffered before the season caused the forward to sit out the 2005 campaign. A Freshman All-American and Big South Player of the Year in 2002, the forward has scored 32 goals and assisted on 19 others in his first three seasons with the Flames and currently is second on the Liberty all-time scoring list.

Just so everyone knows -- what is posted on the official web site comes from the coaches and teams unless it is a game recap or an award. The story about the guys going to camp was only passed on to Media Relations and the media by the team, the day it showed on the site. So please don't play the better late then never card.

Also, the story was actually picked up by several media outlets that day so it really wasn't late to them was it (News and Advance, Soccer America, Richmond Times) and actually generated news for Liberty soccer.

I appaulad this board for the scoops it gets and the passion its posters should, but just remember, there are reasons why you guys get things before the official web site does.

Please don't reply this. This is just to let anyone know why things are the way they are. Thanks!

If you want to make sure the word gets out first, why not bring your scoops here. There's no red tape and you don't have to worry about how many new articles the athletic department is allowed per calendar year.

Go ahead and register and join the community. I'd love to see soccer start getting more attention.

Here's the an update:
'Fringe' players await Beenhakker's call
Tuesday, February 7th 2006

Leo Beenhakker

TRINIDAD and Tobago head coach Leo Beenhakker will take the responsibility for a part of his job that is difficult for many, where players are informed if they will be included or left out.

In this case, it's selection on the Trinidad and Tobago squad to play in their first international match since qualifying for Germany 2006, a friendly game against Iceland on February 28 in London.

The players, even the regulars based overseas, know there are six warm-up matches left before T&T's opening World Cup match against Sweden on June 10 and every opportunity to play in one of those will determine their chances of wearing the national colours on the world's biggest stage.

But for the likes of US college-based youngsters Osei Telesford, Julius James, Darryl Roberts, Anthony Noreiga and Kevon Neaves, while the opportunity of training under Beenhakker in Fort Lauderdale, Florida before the World Cup has been a dream come true, they are prepared to overlook any disappointments when he names his squad.

"This was a very professional camp, all well prepared and well done," Neaves told Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (TTFF) media officer Shaun Fuentes.

"The chance to play with a lot of these players, several of them we looked up to before and admired, especially seeing them in the matches during the qualifiers. We didn't want to come here and step on any toes and create any uncomfortable situations. It was just about working hard with the rest of the players and trying our best to do as the coach said. It was just a really good experience for all of us," he added.

"Of course, it's a stepping stone and we understand this. If it is that we don't get another opportunity during this campaign we know we have to continue working hard and look for the things to come in the campaigns to follow," said Neaves, who is a former Secondary Schools Football League Player of the Year and has developed further since enrolling at the University of South Florida.

Telesford, of Liberty University, felt the same way.

"I was honoured when I got the call to come and train with the guys like (Anthony) Rougier, (Silvio) Spann, and Aurtis (Whitley)-those who were actually involved in the match against Bahrain. The coach was very professional and he welcomed us with open arms," said Telesford.

Neaves pointed out: "He (Beenhakker) makes you relaxed. He wants you to play your football but at the same time he wants you to know this is something serious. He just wants you to clear your head and get on with training and playing."

From the batch of newcomers, Noreiga is one who moves on to the professional ranks now, having been drafted by US MLS club Kansas City Wizards.

"Once I can get chances like these I think I am up for it. There are always ups and downs but we are all becoming more professional about it. I always knew this sort of opportunity was in the making, but I didn't think it would come this soon and it's just a matter of taking it in good stride," said the former Princes Town Senior Comprehensive captain.

CL Financial San Juan Jabloteh midfielder Kerry Baptiste and Nigel Henry, who both played a couple games in the earlier stages of the World Cup qualifying campaign, are also working hard to make the cut.

"I think it was an excellent camp for some of us who were recalled. We worked hard, the coach dealt with us in the right way and we came away with two wins. Most importantly, the coach spoke to us and he explained what the whole process is about and he will decide now how to take things from here. We couldn't ask for anything better at this point," said Baptiste.

Whitley, Cyd Gray, Anthony Wolfe, Rougier, Errol McFarlane, goalie Jan Michael Williams, Spann and Atiba Charles did their share during the camp in Fort Lauderdale, all performing to some degree of satisfaction in the 1-0 win over Florida International University last Friday and the 2-1 victory over Honduras 5-Stars, and, like the others, they will await Beenhakker's call.

From Florida, the T&T contingent were scheduled to return home last night.

The team will reassemble in London on February 26, with the T&T-based players departing Piarco the previous day.
