The VT tournament was much better than the VCU tournament. The ladies went 3-1 in the tourney. We started off a little slow in the first match. It was against VT. The first set was close 23-25 with several lead changes. The second, we looked a little lethargic and ended up losing 19-25. VCU played VT right after we did and destroyed them. We played VCU next and beat them 26-24 in the first set and 25-15 in the second. The Lady Flames had finally awakened and played like they did the last two seasons. Next up was ETSU we were ahead for most of the first set, but dropped it to them 23-25. We came roaring back in the second set and beat them 25-14 and won the third set 15-8. We finished off the day with JMU. We beat them 2-0 easily -- 25-15 and 25-14 I think was the scores.
The interesting thing about this tournament is that we had a completely different lineup because of player availablities. Nicki played middle and Kallie was outside and Courtney Boggs set. All girls did well except in the first match. We had too many unforced hitting errors in the first match and our passing was suspect.
Courtney Cooper and Becka put in some real quality minutes. Coop's defense was great and Becka's serving was spectacular. The real treat of the day was Claire's emergence on the floor. She was a beast! She had a look of determination on her face that I have not seen before. She pounded some kills from both the front and back that were eyepopping.
Brittany played really well and hit with power from the right and played strong defense. Kelly played through a groin pull and made some beautiful digs.
It was a really good peformance overall for the Lady Flames.
