Marching Band stands tunes ideas

Hey guys,

With the football season about half over (and as I start preparing for life after marching band) I was thinking about the fact that many people suggest that teh band play songs everyone knows or recognizes. With that said, I thought Id start a place where people could offer suggestions for tunes I can submit to Dr Kerr. Now there are a couple things.

1. It has to obviously be something people recognize. It doesnt have to be a current song though.
2. When you put a song or two down put the name, the artist, and also put if you can find it the name of the arranger. When I talked to Dr Kerr about "Enter Sandman" he mentioned that he would need the name of the arranger so he doesn tjust get a bunch of suggestions of songs people happen to like b ut arent available for marching band.

I'll take the ideas, put them together and when Dr Kerr opens the floor for suggestions after the season I will submit the list to him

You can't expect us to search through different arrangements of songs. That's ridiculous.

I just thought Id get you to actually think a little more instead of just saying the band needs to play mroe songs and then toss out ones that Im pretty sure arent available. If you cant think of the arranger that's fine.

Isn't it the band director's job to look for band arrangements for songs?

If I get into a taxi cab, I just tell the driver where I'm going. It's his job to figure out how to get me there.

Alright, next time I go home, just for you, I'll look up the arranger for all of my stand tunes.

You know what the easiest thing would be if he wanted to find the good arrangements? Call up App St. Call up JMU. Call up Western Carolina. Ask their directors what they use. Learn from the people that are good.

It is...I just wanted to kinda get people's brains a little more in on this because Ive asked for suggestions before but a lot of the songs were ones that I didnt think had been turned into marching band songs. Even while I was working on this thread I was doing a little research of my own but wanted to pick the mass brainpower of this board as well for ideas.

Are you going sarcastic there, BJ? If so, I'm impressed.

I will once again suggest "Down with the Sickness" by Disturbed. The horn section should have fun with that.

Line in the Sand - Motorhead
China Grove - Dobbie Brothers
Theme from "The Contender" - Hans Zimmer
Soldiers Arrive - Steve Jablonsky (Transformers Score)
The A-Team theme
Airwolf theme
Kashmir - Led Zeppelin
Take Us Out (Rudy Soundtrack)

...just to name a few. Of course, I see these at tunes from the stands, not necessarily a halftime show...but who knows.

Carry On My Wayward Son
You Can Call Me Al
Ironman

There's three right there.

Just look at Ohio State, Michigan, and other schools like that. Or if you want more our level look at JMU, Western Carolina, and App St.

We actually do Call Me Al as a short this year. I'll suggest it as a full song. The band used to do Iron Man but it was banned for some reason (not Dr Kerr's decision). I actually have Carry On My Wayward Son on my list (I found a marching band arrangement of it)

I have yet to hear You Can Call Me Al.

I can probably still play Iron Man, Gimme Some Lovin, Carry On My Wayward Son, and a couple others from memorization from my senior year of high school.

Oh yeah, Rockin Robin is one that doesn't sound too bad in the stands.

Perhaps Iron Man was banned because of its overt Satanic overtones that Ozzy clearly used for effect a quarter century ago. Some of the Old Hags remember it being used as a Pre-Crue example back in the day by overzealous youth pastors.

Everytime We Touch by Cascada

Call Duke and ask for their arrangement.

Relax, Sly. We all know that "great magnetic field" was code for "eat children and smoke hash from their miniature skulls" back in 1973.

I say this in the nicest way possible, but you guys that are requesting rap songs need to realize the makeup of our band and know that yeah, they could play the notes right, but it wouldn't sound like the song.
