Apparently the www.liberty.edu/flames site has changed back to the old logo? :dontgetit

However, I do love the gray as an alternate color. It doesn't work on everyone (cough, West Virginia, cough) but I think we manage to pull it off. My favorite basketball uni's were when they were all gray.

guessing we'll be seeing a lot more gray from now on.

if the whole branding guide had been re-done my guess is everything's a done deal- just got released a bit prematurely.

that or they're letting us do the publicity for them

still a lot of conflicting info online tho... the official .edu site still shows red, white and blue and obviously still using the old logo

probably working over the weekend to resolve the pages

somewhere EL SCORCHO is giggling

They are dropping the current main athletics logo for this new one? So much for brand recognition. How much $ will be spent "re-branding" everything on campus?

I would be interested in the impact (if any) this has on our conference realignment efforts. I'll admit that I really like the logo, at least compared to just the tribal logo. It's classy while still appealing to a younger generation.

I'm wondering if they're gonna re-do the monogram now? I mean the 87 gazillion foot high one on the side of the mountain.

(sorta kidding)

this remains unchanged (so far) http://www.liberty.edu/index.cfm?PID=22894
Usage of “LU”

Since 1971, Liberty University has been Training Champions for Christ and we want to ensure Liberty University continues to distinguish itself from other colleges and universities.
Moving forward, we request faculty & staff refrain from using “LU” when referring to Liberty University in communication with the outside community. This includes text advertisements, recruiting materials, posters or emails, and also in references to Liberty University Online. "LU" can continue to be used when "Liberty University" or "Liberty" is not practical. Examples are items such as baseball caps (where the space available is too small to spell out "Liberty"), the Liberty anthem (where "LU" rhymes with the lyrics) and large applications like the Liberty Mountain monogram. For any further clarification, please contact branding@liberty.edu.

“LU” has been a part of the university’s identity for many years, but the goal of these new guidelines is to capitalize on the fact that Liberty University is the only NCAA school with a meaningful name, rather than a name based just on a person or location. For example, Harvard University was named after its first benefactor, John Harvard, and Princeton University is located in Princeton, N.J. Furthermore, there are many universities across the nation and within Virginia that utilize “LU” such as, Longwood University, Langston University and Lindenwood University. Refraining from using “LU” in our messaging will help prevent additional confusion and will help to further distinguish our university.

Please conduct an internal audit of your current websites, print materials, email texts and anything else that might contain “LU” instead of “Liberty University” or "Liberty." It will not be necessary to discard any current stock of print materials or merchandise, but reorders from this point forward should be consistent with our branding guidelines.

It better stay Flames. If south carolina can live with "Go Cocks" we can live with the flamer reference..

as does this (which conflicts with the updated branding guide)

The Brand Identity Guide
Liberty University Monogram

The LU monogram is Liberty University’s logo used in limited circumstances where it is not practical to use the Liberty University wordmark. Please read Usage of "LU" page for full details. The logo is comprised of a distinct font, which cannot be replicated by simply typing the letters.

Liberty University monogram is the trademarked property of Liberty University. It may not be used by any individual or group on printed materials, websites or in other media without the prior written consent of Liberty University. All manufacturers or retailers wishing to produce or sell items bearing the monogram or any other trademark of the university must receive licensure to do so from the university’s licensing agency, Licensing Resource Group (http://www.lrgusa.com).
Color

The University monogram is comprised of the University colors. The text is blue and the line is red.

Liberty is just not a power house school which is why the current athletic logo works because it gets the name out as well. A LU with an eagle head can be an alternate logo.

We were not involved with this logo, but I think they did a great job with it. You have to remember - it's not the easiest thing to do - mesh a eagle with a flame and then keep it legible from a distance. Liberty is doing something that I have been preaching for years - Get Liberty's brand consistent and just stick with it. Using the same Font across the board is a great idea and I was never a fan of getting rid of the LU. Now is the time to embrace the new look. You have to give it time. The more it's used and consistently - will bring tremendous value to the school in brand recognition. I still hope they use the LU as a secondary mark and continue to keep Liberty in the main logo. I know that they have been getting a lot of good consultation from Brand experts that have helped them to find a look and message, and stick with it.

Don't be silly - they put plenty of research into finding out if this logo was accepted across the board, and in most cases we are the exception on this board. We are die-hard sports fans, we know all sports and can tell you what city a team is from by just glancing at a logo - 99% of Liberty supporters are not like us and will love this logo.

Don't worry about the re-branding of campus - Jerry, Jr. has never let money stand in front of what administration and research says is good for the University.

Go Flames!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PS: forgot to add we now have light blue (more like SKY blue, IMHO) as well as charcoal gray as "secondary colors".

in addition to Athletics Gray as a "alternate color". I believe thats a total of 5. But not black.

I'm confused. :dontgetit

Guess now with launch of the Liberty Flames Sports Network, now was the time to change before the network goes live this fall. I'll be going to the bookstore to get some now "retro" gear before it's obsolete. I'll always be a fan of Proto's logo and how it combined the name, eagle and flames all into one.

Ok, seeing the LIBERTY with the sport underneath in the new font actually looks pretty good. So I see where there coming from I guess. The "Secondary Solitare Eagle" is just awful. It always has been. The overall shape just doesn't look good without the Liberty Flames script in it. The Red and the blue primary logos can grow on me. I see potential there but I still don't really like the one with all of the different colors. I like seeing fighting sparky "offical". I'm not really sure how I feel about the gray replacing white. Gray and not grey. Red, Gray, and Blue. Doesn't really have a nice ring to it. I also don't like the light blue as a secondary BUT I do think it would make nice women's uniforms. I doubt that was the thinking there though.

I don't understand what is happening underneath where the L meets the U. Why does it indent there?

Overall, I'm upgrading this whole thing from certain F this morning, to C-. I guess I'll get used to it as long as I never see that secondary logo on anything other than the branding guide.

"fan the flames, and be true....

to the red, white GRAY, and navy blue..."

***

I agree tho- at this point, seeing what they're going for overall: I'm closer to a C+ and willing to get used to it.

The eagle head itself looks good without the gray. When it's simply one color, it looks really nice. The gray makes it look cheesy and like we were trying to be cool and completely missed it.

Champion Serif is one of the worst fonts I've ever seen in my entire life. It's horrendous. This makes the monogram (and all forms of it) look horrible.

Champion Sans looks really, really nice. I like it a lot.

I like the word mark being two colors. The stacked and the horizontal look good, if it weren't for the horrible Champion Serif font and even worse italics.

Again, the secondary solitary eagle looks amazing without the gray. With the gray, it looks horrible. Classic case of trying to do too much.

Team word marks would look great with the Sans font. They look horrible with the italicized Serif font.

Sparky logo looks phenomenal.

The thing killing this logo is the gray, the serif font and thus the monogram. Change the gray to white, replace anything that is in Champion Serif with Champion Sans, and do the monogram in Champion Sans and you've got my full support. I doubt I'll be buying anything that doesn't just say Liberty or has Sparky on it though. The rest of the logos aren't worth the money.

I can't believe all you guys jumped to conclusions without giving the benefit of the doubt to the powers that be. Of course there was a secret cadre of focus groups which came up with this logo. Doubting Thomas' all of you. This is your logo and you will like it!

Also, I don't think anything changed, but the official academic logo and branding is gorgeous. It's just Trajan Pro but it looks really, really nice. Huge fan of all of that.

Edit: Actually, after looking on the main page, it does look like that stuff has changed. The font's still the same but the way they are using it is different. That looks very nice and is how you tweak a logo and make it better without going crazy.

The same thing happened last year with the shadow added to the logo on some of the new buses. Less can be more.
