Looking into that question; meanwhile here's the wrap STEVEV alluded to:

(IMHO, this has quietly bacome a very talented, underrated team. They've been very much in contention in the majority of the rounds they've played this year: congrats to Coaches Thomas/Klinger and the guys. Now lets get a ladies team together. 9000 students and you can't find 8 females who want to tee off?)

(if anyone reads this thread, besides me)

The guys have really been playing well this year. After the first week, when they slid from 4th to 5th in the final round, they have finished no worse than 4th, lead several rounds, finished 2nd in a playoff and won a weather shortened event.

In short, a very nice season so far, and my hopes are high for these guys to do well at Princeton and then in the BSOUTH championships.

Also looking forward to the establishment of Ladies golf down on the mountain.

I know we talked about this guy before but I can't find the post(s). As far as the range: now I have a legit reason to throw the clubs in the car when I come down!

Frank Landrey tells his True Tales
For former Liberty University Golf Coach Frank Landrey, the writing of his recent book, “True Tales of College Golf,” was a mission from God.
“The theme of (True Tales) is ‘Divine Intervention’,” Landrey stressed. “I wanted for my players and for all those that we met to draw closer to the Lord, even through competition.”

He also has a philanthropic mission behind his book. For every copy of True Tales that is sold, Landrey will donate $1 to the Liberty University golf team – the money will specifically be used for a proposed on-campus driving range.

To help Liberty in its quest for that facility, Landrey is attempting to market True Tales to at least 100,000 people.

That way, he says, the golf team will receive $100,000 towards their driving range, and his message will be more visible to the general public.

As part of the first fruits of that goal, Landrey presented current Head Coach Jeff Thomas with a check for $1,000 at a Flames Club luncheon on Tuesday, March 28. Landrey is also donating 50 cents from the sale of each book to Fellowship of Christian Athletes and 50 cents to College Golf Fellowship, two golfing organizations, which, by his admission, have meant a lot to him as a coach and a player.

In making some remarks to the Flames Club, Landrey gave glory to God for the success of the golf program and praised Thomas for his contributions to the team.

Thomas was of the same opinion as Landrey in his address to the Flames Club members.

“It’s amazing to see how much God’s hand has been on this team,” Thomas said.

Thomas gave a report on the team’s accomplishments in the current season, just prior to Landrey’s statements.

Thus far, those accomplishments have consisted of top-six finishes in each of the competitions the Fairway Flames have entered, including a first place finish at the William & Mary Invitational and a narrow second-place finish to Campbell University in a playoff at the Hargrove Davis Spring Classic. Both tournaments were held earlier this month.

In another segment of his address at the luncheon, Landrey presented Liberty’s “Number One Fan,” Gary Householder, with a copy of True Tales and a hat with the words “True Tales” and “AWAGA” across the front. Landrey challenged Householder to wear the hat at basketball games and to live by its message – Householder responded in the affirmative, to the audience’s delight.

The cryptic slogan on the hat carries implications far beyond mere advertising for a book.

“AWAGA stands for ‘Always With A Godly Attitude’,” Landrey said. The full slogan, SITTAWAGA – SITT meaning “Sock It To Them” – references one of the rallying cries that Landrey’s 2002-03 squad had throughout its season. That team had a dream season – playing well enough to make it to the NCAA East Regional in Auburn, Ala. – and the book chronicles the team’s journey to an NCAA berth. However, it also details Landrey’s intensely personal account of his physical and spiritual journey throughout the process.

“I wrote (True Tales) to be a multipurpose, self-help empowerment book … Anything that worked in my life or in my guys that was worth sharing, is in this book,” Landrey said.

To further bring publicity to his book, Landrey will be quite visible at this weekend’s College for a Weekend experience. He plans to be at the CFAW registration table from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Thursday, April 6, and he will then be in the bookstore April 7-9. For the first 50 books that are sold, Landrey said, he is giving away a free “AWAGA” hat, a giveaway that will occur both at the registration table and in the bookstore.

He quipped that his book would make readers laugh, or he would give them their money back – you just have to catch him on campus.

Individually, McKoy leads the field of 35 golfers with a three-under par 141 (74-67), while Charleston Southern’s Shawn Hall is the only other golfer in red figures with a one-under par 143 (71-72). Birmingham-Southern’s Austin Frye is in third place with a one-over par 145 (75-70).

Liberty’s remaining four golfers are paced by Jay Calvo, who is tied for 17th place with a nine-over par 153 (73-80), Andrew Turner, who is tied for 24th with a 12-over par 156 (78-78), Albie Powers, who is tied for 29th with a 14-over par 158 (77-81) and Peter Horstman, who is tied for 32nd with a 15-over par 159 (78-81).

McKoy will look to maintain his two stroke lead tomorrow when the seven conference schools return to the par 72, 7,001 yard course for a final 18 holes of competition to determine this year’s Big South Men’s Golf Championship.

Getting info from one of CCU's golf-team members that LU may NOT be out of the hunt to make the NCAA's just yet.

Evidently we are actually in a different division than CCU, so - if I understand this: CCU is ranked 5th in their division (south) and the top 8 teams go on. LU is currently 4th in our divison (mid-atlantic), but only the top 4 make it. If we hold on and finish the season ranked 4th, I assume we get an auto-bid for our division.

I could be COMPLETELY wrong here- thats just my understanding of the situation. If someone from our team could jump in here I'd appreciate it. More info to follow........

the listing for Golf staff is incorrect- the names shown are actually the men's baseball coaches

The Golf team was selected as an at-large team to the NCAA East Regional. They will compete in Orlando May 18-20 as the 25th seed in a 27 team regional. It is our second trip in four years and Jeff Thomas's first since taking over for Coach Landrey.

would someone please explain how the selections are made?? here is the official story from the website:
Flames Receive At-Large Bid To NCAA Men's Golf Regional Championship
May 8, 2006
Lyncnburg, Va.

For the second time in the history of the program and the overall athletics department’s history, the Liberty University men’s golf program received an at-large bid to an NCAA Tournament as the Flames are one of 27 teams heading to the East Regional of the 2006 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship as announced by the selection committee today.

The Flames will now travel to Orlando, Fla. to compete at the East Regional, hosted by the University of Central Florida and the Central Florida Sports Commission. The three-day/54-hole event will be played at the par-72, 7,215-yard Lake Nona Golf Club on May 18-20.

Liberty was one of 17 teams that were issued at-large bids to the East Regional, while 10 teams made the field of 27 teams by virtue of automatic bids as they won their conference championships. Liberty was the 25th-ranked team in the East Regional.

Georgia is the top seed in the East Regional, followed by UCLA at second and UNLV at third. Liberty is joined by fellow Big South Conference member Coastal Carolina in the East Regional as the Chanticleers enter the championship as the 10th-seeded team in the Regional.

This marks the second time in the last four years that the Flames have received an at-large bid to the NCAA Regionals. The men’s golf team became the first Liberty athletics program to receive an at-large bid to a NCAA Championship event as the team received the invitation to the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship in 2003.

The 2006 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship will conclude with a four-day/72-event on May 31 – June 3 at the Crosswater Golf Club at Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Ore. Ten teams and two individuals not on advancing teams will move on from each regional to the championship finals.
