Welcome to the board, wilsonr. You sound like you are from my era. Isn't it cool seeing the things we saw in their infancy bloom into today's grand scale.

To be fair, I think the anchor graphic refers mainly to men's basketball...I don't know the creator of that graphic, but since he hasn't posted anything about any other sport on the board, I'm thinking that's what he's talking about...
MAN WEF- you don't miss a THING!
here I figured this little post over here on this innocuous thread would go unnoticed
tell the truth- you keyword search "Winthrop" everytime you log on here

Josh won the IC4A 5,000 today in an incredible time of 13:37.32!
That time was his personal record by almost 15 seconds...if you know anything about track you know that is unbelievable at his level. No really, if I hadn't seen the official results, I wouldn't have believed it. Oh, by the way it was a new Big South and Liberty record as well.
I saw that earlier too. To those who have an untrained eye towards track, and specifically distance, that is really incredible. He is second only to Solinsky who ran a 13:30 this year and is a favorite to win the National Title...he is also the member of a perennially strong Wisconsin program.
Looks like McDougal and staff figured out what the health or training glitch was from the XC Championships...hopefully he is peaking just right and will blast another fast one next weekend.
Fairleigh-Dickinson’s Samuel Chelanga ran with McDougal for 4,400 meters, before the Liberty junior pulled away, covering the last 1,000 meters in 2:33 and opening a nine-second gap over Chelanga.

That's just flat out sick.
Holy Crap. My lungs/legs are hurting just thinking about that.
I do hope he didn't burn it all too early. That race was just 5 days before Nats. On a side note, with that nasty 1,000 at the end, he showed he has a pretty decent kick. Most of the big-time 5ks come down to that. Watch out Chris!
This just in...Josh takes 8th at nats in the 5,000. He led with about 1200 to go, but couldn't hang on. Solinski just had too much. Josh did try to string things out and make it an honest race. I am a HUGE JM fan, but you have to wonder if he went too hard on Sunday when it didn't really count. He still has a shot in the 3k tomorrow, but I think the 5k was his best opportunity.

McDougal Earns Eighth All-America Honor With Eighth-Place Finish In 5K
Josh McDougal came in eighth in the 5,000-meter final Friday evening at the NCAA Divsion I National Indoor Track and Field championships.
March 9, 2007
Fayetteville, Ark.
Liberty junior Josh McDougal placed eighth in the 5,000-meter final Friday evening at the NCAA Division I National Indoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by the University of Arkansas at the Randal Tyson Track Center. With his finish, McDougal is now an eight-time All-American.
McDougal’s (Peru, N.Y.) time, 13:49.97, was actually faster than his clocking from the same meet a year ago, when the Empire State native finished fourth in the 5K. It was the second-fastest time in Liberty and Big South Conference history, trailing only the 13:37.32 McDougal posted while winning the IC4A championship last Sunday.
Wisconsin senior Chris Solinsky crossed the finish line first in the 5,000 meters, in a time of 13:38.61. Arkansas’ Peter Kosgei represented Solinsky’s closest competition, finishing 1.27 seconds behind.
McDougal has now won four All-America distinctions in indoor track and field, three in cross country and one in outdoor track and field. He will aim for another All-America award Saturday evening at 8:50 p.m., when the junior competes in the 3,000-meter final. McDougal has finished fifth in the 3K two years in a row at the national indoor meet.
Lomong and Solinski broke away with 1k to go. Josh made a hard charge in the last lap or so but came up short. Nice effort! I think he's got a great shot to capture his first national championship during outdoor.

Just an observation here (for those of you who happen to meander to this realm of the board)...
Big South Championships won this year- XC/Track-2, Every other team on the Mountain-0.
Congrats to an incredible performance for indoor for JM; I bet he's glad that Solinsky graduates this year.
What are the chances JM becomes an athlete-in-residence a la Billingsley when he graduates next year and helps recruit stronger and stronger recruiting classes each year while training in the Blue Ridge for his post-college marathon aspirations?

Mr McDougal wasn't the only one to find success this weekend...
Hart, Jefferson And Newby Set School Records At Outdoor Track Season Opener
March 10, 2007
Conway, S.C.
Liberty juniors Jon Hart, Carol Jefferson and Piper Newby opened the 2007 outdoor track and field season with a bang, as each set a school record during the Coastal Carolina Invitational, Friday and Saturday. The trio was among 10 Flame event champions.
Just six days removed from a record-setting 5,000-meter effort at the ECAC Indoor Championships, Jefferson (Schwenksville, Pa.) raced to a 35:22.82 clocking Friday afternoon in her season debut at 10,000 meters. Her time cut 55 seconds from her own school record, set last May at the ECAC Outdoor Championships. Jefferson was forced to run by herself out front, as the race runner-up finished 4:39 back.
Jefferson’s effort was just one component of a solid weekend by the Lady Flame distance runners. Ashley Osborne (So., Bristol, Va.) captured the 5,000-meter title in a time of 18:19.09 and Piper Newby (Jr., Hayden Lake, Idaho) eclipsed her own program record by 20 seconds while winning the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:50.31. Like Jefferson, Newby was alone in front of the pack, breaking the tape 47 seconds ahead of second place. Newby fell just .06 seconds shy of qualifying for the NCAA East Regional meet.
The sprints and hurdles were additional areas of strength for the Liberty women’s squad over the weekend, primarily due to the work of Andrea Beckles (So., Lynchburg, Va.) and Arlene Zelinskas (Sr., Dayton, Ohio). Beckles won the 100-meter dash in 12.29 and took third in the 200 with a 25.29 effort. Meanwhile, Zelinskas was the 100-meter hurdle champion in a time of 14.13 and came in second with a 5-7 high jump.
On the men’s side, juniors Hart (Wyomissing, Pa.) and Clendon Henderson (Meadow, Texas) stole the show in the throws. Hart’s aforementioned school record came in his specialty, the hammer. He won the event with a school-record heave of 201-6, edging Radford’s Jeremiah Spence by three inches. Mark Winyard owned the previous mark, 197-0, reaching the distance in 1986. Hart also qualified for the regional meet.
Henderson won both the shot put (53-7) and the discus (176-11), moving up to second place on Liberty’s all-time performer list in the latter and advancing to the regional contest in the discipline. Hart followed closely behind his classmate in the shot put, placing second with a 52-9.25.
Tim O’Donnell (So., Hurst, Texas) was victorious in the 400-meter hurdles, ending up with a time of 53.74. Matt Parker (So., Rome, N.Y.) was Liberty’s final first-place finisher on the day, grabbing the high jump title with a 6-6.75 clearance.
The Flames and Lady Flames, coached by Brant Tolsma, will return to Coastal Carolina this Friday and Saturday for the Shamrock Invitational.
I noticed that the womens track team has a slight lead in the lead after today over Coastal in the BSC track meet. The men have a commanding lead. The women need to get the title back from Coastal. I remember when LU used to dominate in both the mens and womens events but I guess times have changed. We will see what happens tomorrow. I noticed that Brandon Hoskins won the decathlon and set a meet record. I believe that is the first decathlon Brandon has competed in this year and think that it is due to an injury. They say he has All American potential and it is nice to see him back in the swing of things.
and the hits just keep on coming for Josh McDougal and the Liberty track team:

This is HUGE! Josh's 3 wins were impressive, especially the 5 and the 10 on Saturday. They were under an hour apart. My quads and hammys hurt just thinking about it!
