Hopefully this will answer some of the questions and concerns so this topic can be cleared up. I e mailed Chancellor Falwell about this topic and he replied and asked that I post his reply which I will do below. However I will say a couple of things before I post his reply.
1. LU Hockey is a profitable sport. So using that as an example of starting "another" sport is not fair since it is profitable and cannot be compared to other sports that cost quite a bit to start.
2. The Equestrian community is quite unique. Keep in mind the "class" of those that use this sport as their career, generally the upper class. Also it involves those are quite critical of one another because everyone believes that they are the expert. So be careful about believing everything you read on the blogs about instructors and others. It's been said by many that it is the most peculiar community they have ever encountered.
3. The lady with the Equestrian club is acting as club sponsor temporarily until they move to their permanent home next year. LU did initially receive a few complaints about Crystal Rivers that after being researched turned out to be completely erroneous. It seems to be a "click" that rarely accept new members to with open arms.

Here is Chancellor's message:
We (athletics) conducted a new survey of our female students about a year
ago and found more support for field hockey than for equestrian. Based on
the results of that survey, the decision was made that field hockey would be
added instead of equestrian to address the Title IX issues. Student
Activities established the equestrian program at the local farm. The goal
was to provide LU students who wished to bring their own horses to Lynchburg
a place to board them. Part of the program does include an equestrian club
funded completely by students. The local farm was intended to be a
temporary home for the program while pastures were being established on
Liberty Mountain. The land was cleared last year and seeded but new
pastures require a full year to become usable for grazing. The program will
move to its new home next year.
