Yea, God bless them, we even got a few sports questions right, that would have made ole Fumble proud. We're heading to regionals next weekend in Knoxville against the big boys in the SEC:

Here is the LU splash page article about the team. Sly will be pleased to know that our team captain is a Texan: http://www.liberty.edu/index.cfm?PID=18495&MID=15190

ATrain, I believe UVa is in the region that George Mason is hosting. Oddly, regions are sometimes split between states, and LU's team has to travel out of state to Knoxville, rather than playing at nearby GMU.

BUMP

Look for LU's Quiz Bowl team to get recognized in Convocation tomorrow: I believe Jerry, Jr. will be presenting the team with their 4th Big South Conference championship trophy. Yea, and we should also be in the 90 Seconds at Liberty.

Duke Novice Tournament (Sept. 18)

This tournament was for freshmen and sophomores only, who had no previous Quiz Bowl experience in college, and LU's junior varsity team had one huge win over the host team and nearly pulled 2 major upsets.

WIN--LU over Duke, 285-120

LOSS--UNC over LU, 250-245
LOSS--UNC over LU, 200-180

This was our first-ever Quiz Bowl victory over an ACC team.

Think Jeopardy but in teams of 4. They play it in both high school and college. LU's team has won the Big South Conference championship 4 out of the past 5 years and has placed 5th & 6th in the regionals held at UT-Knoxville and Virginia Tech. Our dearly departed Fumble was a member of the team and made all tourney at the Virginia Tech tournament.

Dr. Godwin even made the announcement in Convo that Liberty's team "beat Duke like a drum."

On a side note, LU's current team played our alumni team of 4 former captains last night, and beat them the best 2 out of 3 games, though alumnus Dallas Shipp led all scorers with 410 points in 3 games.

Our next tournament is at VCU on Sunday, Oct. 3:

LU's Quiz Bowl team competed well against a CAA school at a tournament at VCU on Sunday:

LU 150
George Mason 35

Study (and that was even without our second leading scorer, who couldn't make the trip).

Quiz Bowl team earns more wins
November 12, 2010 : Paul McLinden
Liberty University’s Quiz Bowl team scored big again last Saturday, racking up six game wins at the regional Academic Competition Federation tournament hosted by the University of Virginia.

Four of the team’s wins were over North Carolina State University (200-35; 220-100; 250-95; 245-25), an Atlantic Coast Conference team. Liberty chalked up its first ACC win when it toppled Duke University earlier this semester.

Here's a Quiz Bowl article that appeared in yesterday's Champion:

Team claims six wins at last competition

Freshman Marissa Estep heard about the Quiz Bowl team through the Honors Program.

“I decided to join the Quiz Bowl Team because I have always enjoyed answering questions,” Estep said. “I have loved learning about God’s creation through studying science since I was about two. As a science specialist on the Quiz Bowl team, I have the opportunity to be rewarded for answering questions about subjects I am passionate about.”

For Estep most of her preparation for competitions comes from what she learns in her classes.
“Everything I learn in my coursework only improves my Quiz Bowl abilities,” Estep said.

Melissa is home schooled and one of 3 freshman National Merit Finalists on the team receiving a full academic scholarship.

Homeschoolers have to make great Quiz Bowlers, CJ. Lots of independent study time combined with a passion can create a perfect formula for quiz competitions. That's why homeschoolers dominate spelling bees.

I got a nice kick of of seeing a Quiz Bowl thread here...it was one of the most enjoyable things I ever did during my college career.

I "played" for Winthrop for 3 "seasons" (2007-09, tournaments at RU, LU, and G-W) and the Liberty teams were always tough. I remember Dallas Shipp well...sweet mother, that dude knew EVERYTHING.
