Apparently because I would much rather be "flames" than "cocks". There are a heck of a lot more we can do with fire athletically than a cock
Let me try this way. South Carolina is known as the Game Cocks which morphs into nomenclature as Cocks. Very strong and masculine.
Liberty is known as the Flames, which in nomenclature morphs into Flamers. A bit less masculine, with all apologies to ATrain and his P90X'ness.
The only way to make Cock derisive is to switch it to dick, which doesn't really work in this case with SC. However, making the derisive Flamers out of Flames is not a big leap.
That is why you can't compare the two.

Flames is an incredibly normal name. There's a freaking professional team with the name from one of the big 4 sports (and the reason why this is flamefans.com and not flamesfans.com) and another college. Pretty much every sports team in existence has it's name slightly altered by the opposition to make it sound stupid. Sometimes cleverly, sometimes not so much. The Patriots get called the patsies, Bengals the bungles, Chanticleers the chantiqueers, Kentucky kensucky, Browns **** stains, Terps twerps, etc. I don't see why being taunted as flamers would bother anybody.

This was a great opportunity to garner some school spirit amongst the student body. It could have been an open contest to design the new logo with some 'prize' for the winner. Years tuition etc. or you could have had 3 or 4 logo options available for the student body and alumni to vote on them. Or combine the two. If you feel ownership of something you will be more interested in seeing it succeed. Having students and alumni be 'a part of the process' would increase the level and intensity of their support.
But I'm sure not knowing all the facts, that the way they did it was truly the best way and I will grow to love and cherish this logo until such time as it is replaced.

This never really works out well.

Might as well give the fans a chance to fix the problem.

I had to laugh at the title of the article that announced the change..."refined branding poises Liberty for continued excellence"

And to think I thought having winning programs was a sign of excellence, when all you really need is a trendy new logo every few years.

Just now seeing this. Count me in the better than the old but something is still off about it group. I think it's just the font. The design idea is pretty good and a few tweaks should improve it over time.

I was just saying this in the football thread, but the concept, I thought, looked great on TV today. I can see why they made the change although some of the small details could be refined. It's a much more recognizable logo.

Interested to see what some of yall would have come up with...looking at it, do you think that if they took the serifs off and used more of a vertical LU instead of the italicized version we have itd look better (although as I think was mentioned elsewhere, it looked decent on television)

Absolutely. The eagle is fine, the font just isn't working. A little tweaking could make it look very good.

Agreed. Minor changes only are needed with it. For a first version it's pretty good. I'm not sure about vertical/slanted letters, but I think the removal of the serifs is a definite need. Still, it's a professional looking logo and one that should do well in developing our brand.

After seeing it on TV yesterday, I'm starting to really like it. Sure, they could (and will) tweak it a little bit, but after giving it some time to sink in, I do like it much better than the old logo.

I do not like it.

To me it's just an iteration of the previous bad logo we had. This was a fine chance to dump it, but I get why the left the eagle in there from a branding perspective. It's tolerable at this point.

The letter type, however, is terrible. The graphic with three different versions of the eagle is funny to me. Looks like the worst part is the part everyone got on board with first.

Meh. It mostly bothers me that my expectations for it seem to be higher than the people who get paid to care.

I have to publicly acknowledge that the logo has grown on me and after seeing it so much in prep for this game tonight... I'm glad that they made the change when they did. The square logo shows up much better than what we've had in the past and the thicker lines show better on TV.

I actually really love the new logo now. It looks legit on TV
