Is Fumble no longer on the team?

Fumble only plays on the alumni team because the Big South won't let us play graduate students.

The good thing is one of the young players was, I think, #3 overall scorer for the tournament. This is going to be a VERY GOOD group of students to represent LU in the years to come.

Exactly, Fumble--Corbin Payne is only a freshman, and he outscored our senior captain and was the 3rd leading scorer of the whole tournament. And his brother is coming to LU next year.

Check out the article (with pic) of UNCA's winning team. Yours truly took the team pic (though KK is giving credit to the BSC):

Nice article in the school paper today about our Quiz Bowl team: they even included a nice b&w picture of our team down at Gardner-Webb.

I've been emailing our friend Kyle Kallander today, and it's now offical: LU will be hosting (again) the Big South Conference Quiz Bowl tournament on January 30th.

But our first tournament will be next Saturday, Oct. 3, up in Charlottesville against UVa and some other ACC schools.

I wonder if their Quiz Bowl team is as bad as their football team.

To answer Sly & ATrain, LU is hosting 2 out of the last 3 years, because no one else wanted to host it. Either we did, or Kyle wanted the QB teams to take a "hiatus" for a year. I couldn't let that happen.

As to UVa's Quiz Bowl team, they are scary smart. Two years ago we played them at W&M: UVa only fielded one guy who was a freshman, and we were starting 4 experienced players--2 grad students (including Fumble), a lawyer, and a senior English major, and the one guy absolutely destroyed us. And that was the year our team beat the LU faculty 400-5.

Excuse me for my ignorance, but what is "quiz bowl". Is it like jeopardy?

Max, thanks for asking. Quiz Bowl is like Jeopardy, but played with college teams of 4 players with much harder questions. LU's 2 biggest victories were beating William & Mary by over 100 points in 2006 and beating the LU faculty team in 2007 by almost 400 points (the score was 400 to 5).

LU has won the Big South Conference championship 3 out of past 4 years, even going undefeated our first year. Here's a link to our website: https://www.liberty.edu/academics/index.cfm?PID=12721

Next Tuesday, October 20th, the LU Varsity Quiz Bowl team will be taking on the LU Alumni team, with players traveling in from Roanoke, Lexington, and Nelson Country, Virginia.

Also in attendance will be Mrs. Fumble (aka Mary Clare Taylor) as we are renaming this scrimmage the Jeffrey Owen Taylor Memorial Alumni Scrimmage.

Time: 7:00 p.m.
Location: DeMoss 1090

Mary Clare Taylor (Jeff's wife) helped me in giving the Taylor Award plaque to Corbin Payne, who was our high scorer and MVP on last year's Quiz Bowl team.

The LU varsity team won game 1, 270-80. But the LU alumni team came back and won the final two games, 205-195 (on a tie breaker at the end of regulation) and 205-120.

The alumni who came back for the event included Brad Salois, Zach Curtis, Sarah Goin Waddell, Richard North, and Kate Curtis.

In the spirit of Fumble, I should provide an upcoming preview of next Saturday's Big South Quiz Bowl tournament that LU will be hosting in DeMoss 1090, 1101, & 1104. LU finished third last year, and Gardner-Webb is the defending conference champion.

Here is what LU's starting lineup looks like for this year:
Eddie Brown (senior pre-med major from Texas), captain
Corbin Paine (sophomore accounting major from Tennessee), returning team MVP from last year
Jake Rogers (freshman engineering major from Appomattox, VA)
Jeremy Peterson (freshman math education major from Ohio)
Tyler Flynn (sophomore government major from New Jersey), alternate

The tournament begins at 9:00 with 5 rounds scheduled. Other BSC teams include:
Gardner-Webb
Liberty
Radford
UNCA
Winthrop
Coastal Carolina

Sadly, due to budget cuts, VMI will not be able to attend the tourament. BSC commissioner Kyle Kallander will be attending the whole tournament and presenting trophies at the 3:00 awards ceremony in DeMoss 1090. And the following weekend LU will be travelling to UT for the regional tournament in Knoxville.

Radford and UNCA have pulled out, so LU has a 1 in 4 chance of taking home the championship against Gardner-Webb, Coastal, & Winthrop. Kyle Kallander is staying in Charlotte and literally mailing in the trophies (overnight UPS), so our own Jeff Barber will be passing out the hardware at 4:00 tomorrow.

LU is Big South Quiz Bowl Champions!
We finished 5-1, and played Gardner-Webb in the final game when we were both tied at 4-1, and LU won that game to decide the championship. Here is how we did against individual teams in our double round robin tournament:

Game 1--LU defeated Winthrop, 220-55
Game 2--LU lost to Coastal, 75-155
Game 3--LU defeated Gardner-Webb, 190-100
Game 4--LU defeated Winthrop (again), 270-5
(break for lunch)
Game 5--LU defeated Coastal, 120-80
Game 6--LU defeated Gardner-Webb (again), 260-75

Final Standings
LU 5-1
G-W 4-2
Coastal 3-3
Winthrop 0-6

LU's Corbin Payne (a sophomore) was the tournament's high scorer with 240 points (40 PPG). Also, the trophies never arrived--they got as far as Roanoke before UPS shipped them to Charleston, WV--but once they arrive, Jeff Barber will likely present them to us in Convo. Look for us during the 90 seconds at Liberty segment during Wednesday's Convo.
