ATLANTIC CITY One of the rising stars in mixed martial arts, Josh Rhodes prefers to trade punches and brawl.
It's a style that has served him well as he took a 7-0 record with six knockouts into his Cage Fury Fighting Championship light heavyweight title defense against Noah Inhofer at Boardwalk Hall on Saturday night.
But after Inhofer frustrated him by taking the battle to the mat and slowing the pace throughout a first round which the challenger won, Rhodes returned to his Kingsway Regional High School wrestling roots albeit momentarily.
Rhodes appeared in deep thought in between rounds, and shortly after the second period bell he shot in for a double-leg takedown which surely had Jesse Castro, the former Kingsway wrestling coach, beaming if he was watching the pay-per-view from his home in Virginia, where he is now the head coach at Liberty University.
