I spoke with DB (Dan Browne) after the race. He called me from his cell phone while running back to the hotel - yeah, i know, who talks on the phone while running?
He said it was really hot and sticky. "the sort of race where your number is sucked to your chest the whole time." So for Josh I think it was probably a combination of the heat, humidity, and a whilrwind of races this past month. Really no big deal.
It's just the nature of the beast, some days you are in the zone and can take on the world, some days are good, some ok, and some days it feels like someone left the e-brake on.
Figuring it all out is the secret of the sport. My resting HR is 31 beats a minute, I've had mornings where it's been 45 and I've had a great workout and other mornings it's been at 31 (which would indicate my body is recovered) and I tank my run for the day. Sometimes there is no ryhme or reason to it all.
The pace is fine, 14:15 at 5k is nearly a minute slower than Josh's PR - although that was run in near perfect conditions at Mt. Sac. He will have a day at 10k when everything comes together. Just give it time.
